The Garden Department under the direction of Mrs. B. B. Walker, held very interesting meetings. Speakers during the year were Miss Ella Hinshaw on Lillies; Mrs. W. T. Wilson on Hybridizing; Mrs. Chal- mers Glenn, whose knowledge of dahlias is most flatter- ing, had a wonderful display of blooms at the Club House in September of last year. The late Col. Ludlow gave a most interesting talk on roses. Mr. Paul Lind- ley on Shrubs, was instructive and interesting. Mrs. Powell Neely told us of flowers in Hawaii. Miss Edna Maslin presented a thoroughly interesting paper on Iris. In various ways the department earned and contributed to the building fund the sum of $107.65.
The Civic and Social Service department, with Mrs. A. W. Cline as capable chairman, has functioned under the direction of the American Homes department. The individual activities comprised of entertaining through- out the year by such capable women as, Mrs. Mary Camp' Sprinkle, director of the State Board of Charities and Public Welfare, Miss Evabelle Covington, head of the Social Science department of Salem College, Miss Lorena Kelly on "the Church and Social Service." Spe- cial mention should be made of the co-operation of the Council of Jewish Women in the collection of clothing for several rural families.
The principle feature of the Art and Literature, under the leadership of Mrs. J. E. deGafferelly, has
been the organizing of a writers club with a total of seven members, which is under the direction of Mrs. Herbert Carroll. This is the only Writers Club in the Federation and Mrs. Carroll deserves much credit for her efforts in this direction. The department sponsored and assisted in sending a pilgrim on the Adult Educa- tional Pilgrimage to Washington in April. This Pil- grimage to Washington was considered the cutstanding work of the State Federation. In November National Book Week was observed with a most interesting speak- er, Elizabeth Janet Gray, author of girls books. Also,- many other interesting speakers. Our chairman, Mrs. deGafferelly, was in great demand during the period as a most interesting speaker.
One of the busy units of our Club is the Music de- partment. This department, consisting of about sixty five members, has had a very profitable and enjoyable year under the capable leadership of Mrs. E. M. Spivey. They have sponsored the local Atwater Kent Auditions for two years. The work of this department has been conducted by wide-a-wake committees. Miss Mabelle Beatey is chairman of Programs. Mrs. Lindsay Kester is chairman of the evening section, which was organized October fourteenth, ninteen twenty nine, giving the members who could not attend the morning classes an opportunity to study in the evenings. Mrs. Boals is chairman of the study section. Last but by no means the least, the Welfare committee, Miss Jesse Lupo chair- man. Miss Lupo with fifteen other members have assisted at the Y. W. C. A., and factory meetings. Programs have been furnished for special occasions throughout the year, at the Hospitals, Salem Home, County Home, and different meetings at the club house. This depart- ment endorsed and sponsored the sending of the "Pfohl Family Orchestra" to the Boston Biennial Convention of Music.
Mrs. Marion Butler, chairman of Ways and Means Committee, sponsored three teas at which silver offer- ings were made. This Committee has been very busy this year, for early fast fall the Music department voted on a purchase of a Steinway piano for use at the club house which was immediately installed at a cost of $1595, and they have already paid $945. The Treasurer of this department, Mrs. A. C. Perry, has handled a total of $1551 during the year. The Woman's Club as a whole is very grateful to the Music depart- ment for the purchase of this beautiful new instrument for the club house.

The House Committee is to be highly commended for the most efficient way in which the club house has been managed. Mrs. Thomas Maslin chairman and Mrs. Herbert Carroll treasurer. This committee re- ports receipts for the past year, as having been $2,- 175.81 with disbursements $2,167.13. This is a very busy committee, having many difficult problems to solve, attendant on the management of our club house, which requires more work and worry than the average member realizes.
It is a matter of "mother" pride I mention here, that the Junior Woman's Club returned from the State Federation of Women's Clubs with the lovely gavel, on whose silver band is engraved, "Winston-Salem Ju- nior Woman's Club," which signifies this club was win- ner of this symbol for the finest and most outstanding work done by any Junior Woman's Club in the State. Let it be known that the Woman's Club feels a personal pride in the work done by this splendid group of young women, of whom Mrs. Chas. Pegram is the capable President.

Our program committee deserves special mention, Mrs. W. E. Thrasher, Mrs. F. J. Peterson, Jr., Mrs. A. H. Hilker, Mrs. Ed Smith with Mrs. Dallas Kirby as chairman, through whose guidance and untiring ef- forts our elaborate Year Book has been made possible.
I wish to thank each loyal member for her support. You have responded willingly and cheerfully to requests . . for service in any capacity. You have assisted from the Kitchen to the Receiving Line, with your continued co- operation our Club is bound to progress.
Especially do I wish to thank Mrs. T. J. Byerly our capable treasurer. Her tedious work of keeping records correctly has been cheerfully and patiently done.
I wish to thank the officers of the club, all com- mittee chairmen for their loyal support and splendid co-operation for the work accomplished this year.
We as a club, want to become a real community as- set, as club members we want to strive to make our activities a real service to the community.
Respectfully submitted, Golda J. Watson, President
THE SPLENDID CO-OPERATION OF MER CHANTS AND BUSINESS FIRMS OF THE CITY WITH OUR CLUB
A pleasing spirit of co-operation with our Woman's Club prevails among merchants and business concerns of our city, and we want to take this opportunity of advising our Club members as well as our many friends. of the wonderful spirit of co-operation we have found in Winston-Salem this past summer, in fact at all times, but especially so this summer.
The Club House has needed repairs, re-decorating. etc., for some time. With our depleted Treasury, caused by interest payments on our Club House debt, only a miracle could work the necessary changes.
The "miracle" has been worked through the gener- osity of the following business concerns: Gordon Paint Co., of North Spruce Street, gave us fifty rolls of beautiful paper for our halls; Mr. John Knouse, Pain- ter and Decorator, 208 Shawnee St., papered the walls. Mr. Knouse not only gave of his time for papering, but mixed paint for us on several occasions.
With the entrance hall so bright and cheerful, it seemed quite necessary to have the Library in harmony.
Gateways Stores, Inc., 219 West 5th Street, who have a large assortment of attractive wall coverings, also gave us fifty rolls of wall paper which were put on walls of the library by Mr. Ernest O. Charles, 2012 Waughtown Ave. The work is well done and the appear- ance of the room greatly improved.
Miss Ada Allen, Interior Decorator, 800 South Main Street, also gave generously of her time and talents.
The music room and dining room were left looking so dingy and dreary, compared with the clean new paper of the other rooms, that something had to be done. The Vick Paint Company of 506 North Trade Street, came to our rescue. This Company also carries a complete line of Wall paper, and gave us fifty rolls, which were
put on walls by Mr. M. F. Peddycord, of 206 North Main Street. In Mr. Peddycord's work it was necessary to remove old paper and do much scraping of side walls. This hard work was cheerfully and skilfully done. The room is now a credit to the concern.
To carry out the "scheme" of newness and fresh- ness, a quanity of paint was then essential for bath rooms. The Brown-Rogers-Dixon Hardware Co. donat- ed four gallons of green paint for this purpose. You should see the bath rooms in their new coloring.
We are deeply indebted to the Electric Service Co. of 116 West 4th Street, for the installation of brass electric light switch plates, to replace the antiquated wooden ones which were most unattractive on our new light colored paper.
Of course we could not neglect the floors! The Winston-Salem Hardware Co., 215 West 5th Street, came to our aid by giving us a gallon of shellac and a pound of wax, with the result that our floors now look like new.
The Rominger Furniture Co., 423 N. Liberty St., gave us a good looking day bed for our sun room, which has been rented as a Studio.
The Magic Queen Cleaner Co. donated their won- derful Magic Cleaner for cleaning and brightening wood work.
Mr. H. A. Tatem, 1117 East 5th Street, upholster- er, re-upholstered several chairs for us. Huntley-Hill- Stockton graciously donated the material for this splen- did work done by Mr. Tatem.
Also, Huntley-Hill-Stockton Co. donated a runner for the side entrance hall.
Mr. H. L. Wilkes, 1838 Mansfield, painter and Decorator, took real pity on us, and with real interest papered the only two remaining rooms which werew

dreary and cheerless. These rooms are now bright, and in keeping with the other freshly papered rooms.
With walls and floors freshened, and looking like new, something must be done about windows! Van Dyke's, Inc., gave us twenty-six yards of Mohair Case- ment Cloth for wondows of one room.
The Ideal Dry Goods Co. gave us twenty yards for another room.
Mrs. Lena Stagg, 622 West 4th Street, very kind- ly gave us fifteen yards of material for another room.
Of course the proper draping of these materials for our windows was very necessary. This Mr. S. B. Knight, painter and decorator, 630 West 4th Street. has done for us in a most thorough and artistic manner. Consequently, our draperies are beautifully made and hang evenly.
The Carolina Hotel Apartments gave us two most attaractive Love seats for our entrance hall.
For these Love seats, Brown-D'Onofrio, 307 Rey- nolds building gave us two handsome pillows of Hol- land Block Print. To make this setting complete we have two mahogany end tables of Lyre design donated by the Anchor Stores, Ine., all of which make our en- tranee hall most attractive.
The upper sleeping porch has been painted. Mor- risette Company, 426 N. Liberty St., gave us a bolt of sheer white voile for window hangings, which were made by our Hostess, Mrs. McNeil.
More space on our main floor was badly needed for storing our many extra ehairs when not in use. Fogle Brothers Co., 202 Belews St. enclosed our back porch, thus giving us a weather-proof enclosure for housing extra furniture, which was badly needed. We are very grateful to them for their work.
In making preparations for winter weather, our furnace and boiler needed a complete inspection. Thanks to The Connelly Engineering Co., of North Liberty St., inspection and cleaning of our heating apparatus has been made, and everything is in first class condition for coming eold weather.
In making ready for the winter months, cleaning and renovating of bed-coverings were absolutely neces- sary. The Zinzendorf Laundry has very kindly clean- ed all of our blankets, returning them, clean, soft and fluffy, all ready for use.
Dunn's Laundry was good enough to launder all sheer bed-room curtains. They were returned clean and white, with all ruffles daintly plaited.
O'Hanlon's Drug Co. presented us with three cases of ginger ale for the iced tea we served with the Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary luncheon, at the Woman's Club on August the 25th, 1930.
Morris Early Furniture Company gave us a beauti- ful rose linen rug for the hostess room.
Winston Steam Laundry, has returned all our shades beautifully cleaned.
Realty Bond Supply Company, on North West Blvd. has made us three splendid advertising boards.
The Reynolda, Inc., has trimmed our trees to make the exterior as attractive as the interior.
Because of the many real kindnesses shown us by the merchants of Winston-Salem-because of the many dollars our club has been saved in various and sundry ways by them-because of actual service and hard la- bor given by them-because they have been the means of making the interior of our Club House a place of beauty and cleanliness-we say we believe in the mer- chants of Winston-Salem who have co-operated with us 100 per cent. We tender our sincere thanks and appre- ciation, and hope that each and every member of our Club will take every opportunity of patronizing all mer- chants herein mentioned, thus showing in a substantial way our full appreciation of their many favors.
Also, we wish to thank all merchants who have been kind enough to take advertising space in our Year Book. We hope that Club members will make every effort to patronize all who have been kind enough to favor us with an "ad."
