The Winston-Salem Branch is one of the ten Pranches of the State of North Carolina. The State organization is in turn a part of the National organization.

The A. A. U. W. was founded in 1899 as the Asso- ciation of Collegiate Alumnae. In 1921 the name was changed to American Association of University Women. It is now a link in the International Federation of Uni- versity Women.

The purpose of the original organization was to raise the standard of education of women. As part of the International organization its purpose is to promote an understanding and friendship between the University Women of the world and thereby further their interests, and develop between their countries sympathy and mu- tual helpfulness.

The original purpose found its outlet in the investi- gation and improvement of elementary education; the raising of loan funds and the endowment of scholarships. As the ideals and scope has widened so has the outlet and the goal now set is the endowment of a million dol- lar fellowship fund, both National and International in its aspect. The South Atlantic section, of which North Carolina is a unite, is responsible for one of the 25 fellowships.

In addition to a definte program and group study, the Winston-Salem Branch sponsors the sending of two Industrial girls to the Bryn Mawr summer school each year.

The club plans this year to center its program about some community service.
