Growth in Population
Growth in industry has been reflected in the increase in population that has in 87 years made Winston-Salem one of the two largest cities in the state. The combined population of the two towns, Winston and Salem, was 4,197 in 1880. By 1890 it had more than doubled to 10,729. Census reports for the decades following show:
1900 .13,650, an increase in ten years of 27.2% 1910 . 22,700, an increase in ten years of 66.3% 1920. . 48,395, an increase in ten years of 113.2%
1930. . 75,274, an increase in ten years of 55.6%
The estimated population in 1936 was 85,000, with continuous growth being noted.
Natural Advantages
The industrial achievement of Winston-Salem has been facilitated by a number of natural advantages which likewise contribute to the city's desirability as a place in which to live and visit.
Winston-Salem is located on the Piedmont plateau, which extends from Virginia through western central North Carolina and South Caro- lina into Alabama. Predicted by the late Franklin K. Lane to become the "greatest industrial area in the country," this area is rapidly advancing toward the fulfillment of his prediction.
The exact location is:
Latitude: 36 degrees, 05 minutes, 48 seconds.
Longitude: 80 degrees, 14 minutes, 48 seconds.
Protected by neighboring mountain ranges-the Blue Ridge, the Sauratown and Pilot Mountain-at an altitude of 885-1,000 feet, the city enjoys a remarkably balanced climate. It has an average of 232 clear days a year, and a mean temperature of 58.2 degrees F .- high, 93; low, 11. Normal for July, 70-75; normal for January, 35-40. Rainfall, 54.4 inches; snowfall, 6.5 inches.
The city is the year-around gateway for such famous resorts as Pine- hurst and other Sandhills winter communities, and the summer mountain resorts of Roaring Gap and Blowing Rock, and is within less than a day's comfortable motoring of the most colorful stretch of the Atlantic Coast to the east, and the peak of eastern America to the west.
With a wide variety of cultural and recreational facilities, the city is attracting increasing numbers of tourists throughout the year.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.
The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly adhered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all de- partments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one heading that best describes it, and to treat addi- tional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and standard- ize methods and classifications, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a business and
social reference book and director of buyer and seller.
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business in- tegrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circu- lation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its accessibility to seek- ers, rather than on the number of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved or- ganizations and individuals engaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the high- est and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.
$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.

The City Directory
places the city on the map and is its only representative to the world beyond its own gates.
" It is the city's catalogue of busi- ness and represents the city, its citizens and institutions in every corner of these United States.
"It is the logical means of pub- licity in advertising the city, its manufacturing industries, its advantages and resources.
" The men who direct the affairs of progressive and up-to-date business institutions recognize the fact that the City Directory tells the story of the city's life and keeps it before the public as no other publication does or can.
"Its Classified Business Section furnishes a list of all trades, professions and pursuits, consti- tuting a special trade directory or buyers' guide and is the best advertising medium on earth.
