TOWN OF TAMWORTH. .

TO THE TAX PAYERS OF TAMWORTH.

On the following pages will be found the financial condition of the town and the labors performed during the year.

The total indebtedness of the town last year outside of trust funds was $715.39, which we have paid this year and have a balance in the hands of the Treasurer of $107.03.

BRIDGES-During the past summer the Osgood Bridge was entirely rebuilt, also one abutment, at a cost of $103.00.

JEFFERS BRIDGE-One abutment was built at Jeffers Bridge at a cost of $43.00.

The condition of the bridges is generally good, but we would recommend that the town should raise the sum of $400.00 for the repairs and building of bridges.

The expenditures for the past year were $419.78 against $200.00 appropriation, leaving a balance of $219.78 in excess of the appropriation.

PUBLIC LIBRARY-The Public Library has had in excess of the appropriation the sum of $46.34 for painting of building, and insurance of books, furniture, etc , for the term of three years.

Most respectfully submitted, WALTER J. HAMMOND, FRANCIS P. REMICK, E. D. HENDERSON, Selectmen of Tamworth.

THEE

:

Report of School Board.

It is gratifying to state that the past year has been one of very unusual success and advancement along educational lines. We feel that a very efficient corps of teachers has been em- ployed and most excellent results obtained, yet a successful school does not depend alone upon the teacher or School Board. The co-operation of the parents must be secured; and to this end it is far more desirable to gain a knowledge of the school work and discipline by visiting the school, and observing the methods and recitations, rather than judging wholly from the reports of the children. We cannot too strongly urge upon parents this important feature of a successful school. Do not wait till the teacher invites you. Do not wait for an entertain- ment or visiting day, but go and see the regular work of the school, then you are better qualified to pass correct judgment.

Another thing we lament in many schools is the irregularity of attendance. With all other conditions favorable, this serious fault will interrupt and often prevent any real progress. The child loses interest -his work becomes irksome, and we all know how hopeless are the results under such circumstances.

The school-houses of the town being in fairly good condi- tion, have received little in the way of repairs the past year. But the question of erecting a new school house at the village is being agitated, and we hope it will receive vigorous endorse- ment from our citizens. Another urgent need of the town is a High School, which, with a new building at the village, might be considered possible.

Our town has many bright boys and girls who, with better advantages than those afforded by the district school, might fill far higher and more useful places in life than they otherwise can attain. As a result, Tamworth might furnish more of its

teachers, rather than be compelled to employ so many from other towns.

We have introduced Metcalf's Language Series the past year, which we think will prove very satisfactory. We have endeavored to supply text-books which, clearly and concisely teaching the subject, yet make it interesting to the child.

We would urge upon the citizens to continue a liberal sup- port of the schools, knowing that an education is the greatest legacy that can be given the child.

LESLIE O. MEADER, ALICE B. REMICK, School Board of Tamworth.
