INTRODUCTION.

A long experience in consulting directories convinced me that one abounding in inaccuracies, in errors of omission and commission, subjected the person who relied upon it to so many costly and vexatious annoyances, that it was not only generally useless, but often worse than none; that a directory of Manchester free from serious faults never had been, nor would or could be made by parties who are stran- gers to the city and totally unacquainted with its people, institutions, and business.

Investigation of the subject led me to believe that a di- rectory which should embody the results of a careful home canvass, and be measurably free from mistakes, could be profitably furnished at half the price which our people have been compelled to pay for the one hitherto in use ; and that he who furnished it, while losing nothing himself, would give employment to a number of men, and thereby con- tribute something toward the prosperity of the city.

These and other similar considerations led to the projec- tion of this volume. It does not contain all the facts and statistics which I at first intended it should, and which I propose to incorporate in future ones, but it will be found much more complete and accurate than any similar work ever presented to the citizens of Manchester, and can, I

4

INTRODUCTION.

think, be relied on. The work has been begun and will be continued as a Manchester enterprise, dependent upon Manchester skill and industry for its character, and upon Manchester patronage for support. It is, therefore, a sub- ject which need not concern people outside of Manchester ; but certain parties have seen fit to take a notice of its probable appearance in high dudgeon, and to provoke a comparison between it and the book which has been jerked into the city from Boston ; and I take pleasure in asking all purchasers to make such comparison as minute and careful as possible. The Boston work, which is apparently made up of sections of the directories of Manchester, Lowell, and Lawrence, for years prior to 1877, and which therefore omits the names of five hundred of our citizens, and puts in their place those of people long dead and of nearly two hundred who were never heard of here, is in it- self a justification of this enterprise ; and if, in undertaking it, I have hurt the feelings or the business of those who have charged us $2 for a book which they now confess they can afford to sell for half that price, I cannot help it, and do not wish to. Manchester people are not accustomed to go to Boston for a license to manage their own affairs.

To all who by their patronage and courtesy have enabled me to bring the initial volume to its present state of com- pleteness and success, I am under great obligations, which I shall seek for occasion to discharge.

The book is intended as an annual, and designed for the year in which it is issued. It may be expected on the first of each January hereafter.

JOHN B. CLARKE.
