NEWSPAPERS.

The first newspaper published in Manchester was the " Representative," established October 18, 1839, since which time a large number of journalistic ventures have been made, religious, political, and literary, with varying suc- cess. Some of them issued a few numbers and then ex- pired, others survived months, or years, and still others, with changes in name and ownership, survive to this day. The following are published regularly at the present time : -

DAILY MIRROR AND AMERICAN.

No. 64 Hanover street, Post-office block. Established as the " Daily Mirror," October 28, 1850, by Joseph C. Emer- son. In February, 1852, John B. Clarke became editor,

MANUFACTURES.

The history of the manufacturing interests of Manchester is almost coeval with that of the city itself. They are the source of its vitality, having raised it from the level of a mere fishing resort to its present position of commercial importance and thriving activity.

From a small beginning, on the west side of the river, where yarn was spun, the cotton having been previously cleansed by hand in the neighboring families, the business has progressed until the corporations of the city employ nine thousand persons, and have a monthly pay-roll of three hundred and eleven thousand dollars. They use every year twenty-six thousand and one hundred tons of coal, eight thousand cords of wood, and about thirty million feet of gas. The mills have about three hundred thousand

spindles, and make one hundred and forty-three miles of cloth a day.

Closely identified with the interests of the city have been the growth and prosperity of the

AMOSKEAG MANUFACTURING COMPANY.

In July, 1831, the legislature of the State passed, and five men accepted, an act authorizing the formation of a company bearing the above name. There were then a few small buildings which had been used for manufacturing purposes, but the mighty power of the Merrimack River was yet to be developed, and its latent strength utilized by the ingenuity of man to create, enrich, and adorn a future city. Absorbing several lesser companies which had com- menced operations along the river, the young and vigor- ous corporation went straight to its work. They purchased fifteen hundred acres of land on the east side of the river, built a new dam, constructed canals, erected mills, leased and sold water privileges and mill-sites to other corpora- tions, and laid out the site of a town, building tenement and boarding houses for their own operatives, and selling large tracts of land to new settlers. The liberal policy which has marked its course from its beginning until the present time has been attended with deserved prosperity, and there are probably few corporations in America to-day whose history presents so few reverses as does that of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. During the war of the rebellion, a portion of their works was converted into an armory, and forty thousand stands of arms were made for the government. Their steam fire engines have a repu- tation the world over, and their tickings, sheetings, and other cloth manufactures are in every market. The page of statistics will give some idea of the present resources of the company and its workings. (See page 295.)
