STARK MILLS.

This corporation was chartered in 1838, with a capital of five hundred thousand dollars, and commenced operations immediately. In 1845 the capital was increased to seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, in 1846 to one million, and in 1847 to one million two hundred and fifty thousand. They own fourteen acres of land, occupied for mills, board-

ing-house and overseers' blocks, etc. The goods manu- factured are cotton and linen, the latter product being in the form of crash and toweling, while the cotton goods are sheetings, drillings, duck, and bags, the latter being widely known as the " seamless bags," being woven in one piece. They make a specialty of heavy goods, requiring a pro- portionately large amount of raw material. The present agent at the Mills is Phinehas Adams, under whose excel- lent management the market value of the stock has in- creased about fifty per cent. The appended statistical page illustrates the operations of the corporation, and gives its business organization. (See page 296.)

MANCHESTER MILLS.

This corporation was organized in 1839, with a capital of a million dollars, for the manufacture of dress goods. The Amoskeag Company had previously made the fabric for delaines in their mill at Hooksett, but the printing was done elsewhere. Mr. Straw went to Europe in 1844, to acquire the necessary information to enable the company to print the delaines, and in 1845 the first mill was erected, which went into operation the next year. In 1847 the property was sold to a corporation which was chartered the previous year, with a capital of one and a half million dol- lars, under the name of the Merrimack Mills, which was afterward changed to Manchester Print-Works, and its capi- tal increased to eighteen hundred thousand dollars. In 1873 it was re-incorporated, under the name of the Man- chester Print-Works and Mills, with a capital of two million dollars, and in 1874 the name was changed to the Manches- ter Mills.

The corporation owns about forty-three acres of land in all, a portion of which is on the west side of the river. It has six mills, and leases forty mill-powers of the Amoskeag Company. The goods manufactured are principally worsted dress goods and prints, and many of its employes are skilled artisans from the old world, who have brought with them the knowledge acquired by years of study and experiment.

The manufacturing and printing departments are owned by the same corporation, but their workings are illustrated separately, on the two statistical pages given herewith. (See pp. 298, 299.)

LANGDON MILLS.

This corporation was chartered in 1857, and organized in 1860. Its capital stock was two hundred thousand dol- lars, which was subsequently increased to five hundred thousand. It has two mills, one of which was formerly used as a paper-mill, the other having been built in 1868 by the company. The corporation is successfully and prudently managed, and its goods find a ready market, comprising the finer grades of shirtings and sheetings. The statistical page given herewith illustrates the extent and importance of its operations. (See page 297.)

NAMASKE MILLS.

In 1856 a corporation was organized as the Amoskeag Duck and Bag Mills, and ten years later the name was changed to Namaske Mills. In 1875 the property passed into the hands of the Amoskeag Company, by whom it is now managed, Mr. William B. Webster being the superin- tendent. The goods manufactured are principally ging- hams and shirting flannels.

DERRY MILLS.

This corporation was organized in 1865, with a capital of one hundred thousand dollars. Mr. S. R. Payson is now proprietor, and George F. Lincoln the agent. The property comprises three mills, on the Cohas brook, at Goffe's Falls, and the following shows their average pro- duction : -
