Report of Superintendent of Water Works For the Year Ending December 31, 1918
To the Committee on Water Works:
GENTLEMEN :- The twenty-seventh annual report of this department is herewith submitted.
Source of supply during the year: Round Pond, Jan. 1 to Jan. 8 and July 16th to Dec. 31st; Reservoir, Jan. 8th to July 16th.
The supply has been very good from both Reser- voir and Round Pond and the State Chemist sends favorable reports from both sources of supply.
The winter of '17 and '18 will long be remem- bered by all Water Works men, and while we had our share of trouble it was nothing to what they had South of this section and I wish to extend thanks to all of the customers who were so patient during that trying time.
We were unable to do but very little construction this year owing to the high prices of material, labor, etc.
We have extended the main on Pine Street, a dis- tance of 112 feet to accommodate the new houses built the past year.
No new hydrants have been installed this year.

Sewer connections cleaned during the year 31
We have cleaned main sewer of various obstruc- tions at Walnut Street, Springfield Court, and at Sum- mer Street, East Rochester. Also catch basin branch at Gonic Square.
It was considered useless to lay main sewer pipe as the prices were too high on everything in that line the past year.
An inventory of material and tools in this depart- ment is on file in the City Clerk's Office.

Report of Chief Engineer of Fire Department
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council:
In rendering my report of the Fire Department for the year ending December 31, 1918, I would state that we have been very fortunate in not having many serious fires, but we may not always be as fortunate, therefore, it stands us in hand to be prepared for what- ever emergency may arise by up-to-date equipment.
There has been 16 bell alarms, 70 still alarms, mostly chimney fires, 22 brush and forest fires, 2 bell alarms, 7 still alarms at East Rochester ; 2 bell alarms, 10 still alarms at Gonic; making a total of 129 alarms for the year.
The amount of property involved is as follows :
Value of buildings
$95,100 00
Insurance on same 92,100 00
Losses paid 9,505 00
Value of contents, 16,425 00
Insurance on same 13,450 00
Losses paid 4,659 67
The amount of property involved in fires from two to four miles out side the hydrant services is as follows :
183
CITY OF ROCHESTER
Value of buildings
$5,800 00
Insurance on same
2,135 00
Losses paid
1,347 85
Value of contents
5,550 00
Insurance on same
3,000 00
Losses paid

Locations of these fires: One in Meaderboro, one near Flat Rock Bridge, one on the Salmon Falls Road, two near Pickering's Crossing, one on the Milton Road. We also had two dangerous chimney fires on the Salmon Falls Road, the men and the combination chemicals did good services in saving property at all these fires.
The motor truck has responded to 123 alarms this year, 11 of these fires have been where some parts of the building was afire and has been put out by the men and the chemicals and has saved water damages.
I would recommend that the city purchase a suit- able motor truck to take the place of the hose wagon at Cocheco station, for this wagon weighs one ton, and the number of men will average from three to five to start out with this wagon, and by the time the other men arrive the first lot of men is exhausted and by the time they all arrive at the fire they are not in any condition to start in to fight a bad fire. I think this matter should have your consideration.
In behalf of the Fire Department I will take the opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to all those who have been so kind and have given to the Depart- ment, to show that they appreciate their good work.
In behalf of the Board of Engineers I will take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to all the officers and members of the Fire Department for the

promptness with which they have discharged their duties during the past year.
We would also thank the Mayor and members of the Fire Committee for their good work for improve- ment in the Department.
In conclusion I wish to thank the Mayor and members of the City Council for what they have done to assist the Department during the year.
Respectfully submitted
JOHN F. NUTE,
Chief Engineer of the Fire Department.
