REPORT OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION
In presenting the annual school report we inake the following remarks.
The Board have endeavored in their selection of teachers to pro- cure those of experience and ability. Nearly all the children in the different schools have endeavored to profit by the advantages with which they have been surrounded. And those who have attended school for the purpose of obtaining an education we think have shown great improvement.
But we are sorry to state there are a few scholars that take no interest whatever.
We think in regard to this matter, that if parents and guardians would take more interest that better results would be obtained.
We have introduced, during the fall term a "course of study" which in course of time we think will be beneficial to our schools.
We found the text books in very poor condition at the beginning of the school year, but owing to small amount of money assigned for this purpose, we were not able to buy as many new books as were . needed.
We are glad to say that the attendance during the past year has show marked improvement.
But we have had several cases which required the assistance of the state truant officer.
The South side of the Village primary school has been reshingled also a few needed repairs done inside.
The West primary school house has been made presentable to visitors also safe to the scholars.
We found during the fall term the cupola on the grammar school house was in such a condition that we were obliged to overrun our appropriation to repair same.
To enable the Board of Education to enforce the law in the out districts and also to give those children a better chance to obtain an education we would recommend $100.00 be appropriated over pres-
33
ent appropriation for this purpose, as we do not deem it advisable to shorten the school year.
We should also recommend the sum of $35.00 be appropriated for text books and school supplies.
We would recommend the sum of $75.00 be appropriated for general repairs during the coming year.
