We desire to call the attention of the voters of the town to the large amount paid out for which no appropriation or pro- vision was made. We refer to expenses of the small pox case, $476.83, which was incurred last year; $118.06, expenses of the Carpenter case vs. the Town, which should have been set- tled several years ago ; $10 for a ballot box furnished six or eight years ago; $132 for $15,000 insurance on Conway Public Library for three years; $700.89 for school books, which is $1.16 per capita for each scholar enrolled in town, and the ex- pense of perambulating town lines, $93.25, making a total of $1,531.12.
There being but $1,000 raised and appropriated for town expenses, it will be readily seen that with one item under that head amounting to more than the whole appropriation, and the

above mentioned bills to pay which were not expected, it would be out of the question to show a decrease in the liabilities of the town during the past year.

School Committee's Report.
The year just closed has been a year of successful school work. Thirteen pupils were graduated from the grammar school course : six at Conway Center, six at North Conway, and one at East Conway. Those in the Conway Center class were :
Arthur Masterton, William Perry, Alta Cameron, Edith Philbrook, Edith Thoits, Nellie Masterton.
The following were in the North Conway class :
Edith Nute, Helen Lucy, Jennie Allen, Howard Chase, John Bailey, Harry Charles.
At East Conway :
Harold A. Andrews.
A larger number will complete the course next June. The grammar school course completed, shortens the pupil's course at a high school or academy by one year; or in other words, a first year's high school work is given in the last year at the grammar school. Our grammar school graduates are admitted to the second class in Maine and Massachusetts high schools, as well as in those of New Hampshire.
But eternal vigilance is the price of keeping the schools up to the present high standard. With less thought given to them, less time given to them, they would soon become once more the mixed, ungraded schools of a dozen or fifteen years ago. And therefore the School Board earnestly recommend that a Supervisory District be formed as soon as may be, and a supervisor employed who shall give his whole time to the care of the schools. It would be deplorable to lose the proud distinction of having the best schools in Carroll County and to fall back to the "deestrick skule" of our grandfathers, or even of our fathers.
