FIRE ALARM SYSTEM. -
The Stevens Fire Alarm System, which was installed in . April, 1897, has proved to be all that was claimed for it and has saved many times its cost in getting alarms in promptly. Like all electrical apparatus, it requires constant care and attention. It has never failed to work when needed for an alarm.
FIRE HOSE.
The 2000 feet of fire hose which was purchased of the Revere Rubber Co. is now in its fifth year of service and the warrant given by the makers has expired. No hose is now warranted for more than three years, although the Revere Rubber Co. has re-lined 200 feet of hose during the past year without expense to the town, and have made their war- rant good, which was for four years, being one year more than was offered by any other hose manufacturer when the hose was purchased. The use of shut-off nozzles, while of great advantage at fires, subjects the hose to a great bursting strain and shortens their life materially. It may be expected that some hose must be replaced each year hereafter, in order that the fire equipment be kept up to the present standard.

When a fire breaks out the person discovering it should immediately run to the box nearest the fire, break the glass in the front of the small key box which is on the side of the fire alarm box, take out the key, which is attached to a chain, unlock the fire alarm box, open the door and pull down the hook as far as it will go, then let go the hook. REPORT OF SCHOOL BOARD.
The task of writing an extended statistical report of the condition of the Newmarket schools was assigned to the act- ing Superintendent, the late Dr. J. L. Elkins. His unex- pected demise, at the very close of the fiscal year, makes the presentation of such a report at this time impracticable. At the end of the school year, in August next, such a report will be filed with the Selectmen, as the Statute requires, and as may then be suggested by the numerous puzzling conun- drums of the State Superintendent.
In compliance with the vote of the district, all details of school management have been entrusted to a Superintendent, subject to the general revision and approval of the School Board. His duties have been performed in such a manner that the schools are now running without perceptible friction and we are hearing very little complaint from the parents. It is also gratifying to report that a liberal reduction has been made in the district debt.
.
A brief financial statement is published by the Treas- urer for the information of voters and tax-payers, to the end that they may vote intelligently when the funds are raised for the support of schools. A full itemized and audited state- ment will be published in the August report. A large part of the unexpended balance which now appears will be re- quired to meet the bills of the present term.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.
REPORT OF TRUSTEES.
Full reports of the Commissioner of the General Land Office, of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, of Commis- sioner of Education, of Director of Geological Survey, Mis- cellaneous Reports of Subordinate Officers of Interior De- partment, are now upon our shelves, which, although not often sought for by general readers, are of great value in pursuing special lines of study, and we regard them as a val- uable addition to our library. A fine selection of Historical Works of the War with Spain, and of the countries which have come into the possession of the United States as a re- sult of the War, have been added, making the Library in this line very complete. Other large additions have been made, · making the number of books belonging to the Library nearly four thousand. The Library is in excellent condition, well kept, and is very fully patronized.
