STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT

February 15, 1916.

Highway appropriation required in the town of North Hampton for general repair of highways and bridges, $1,650.00.

If the town does not vote to accept State Aid, it must set aside as a permanent improvement fund, $1,239.00.

If state aid is desired, there must be raised and set aside the sum of $619.50.

If state aid is accepted and voted, the state will appro- priate $464.50.

STATE HOUSE, CONCORD, February 15, 1916.

Town of North Hampton.

Mr. Albert Bachelder, Chairman:

Dear Sir :- Under the provision of the Motor Vehicle law the State is able to assist in the maintenance of the roads under State Aid.

There is available, from the amount appropriated last year, the following balances:

State Aid

In State Treasury. $146.26

In Town Treasury 146.26

The estimate for maintenance in your town for the year 1916 is $1800.00.

If the town will appropriate for such maintenance the sum of $900.00, the State will appropriate $900.00.

Inasmuch as the Motor Vehicle law did not change the town liability for maintenance of a road I trust that your town will raise the amount indicated herein and so benefit by the State's proportion, as otherwise the entire maintenance charge will fall upon the town.

The item for maintenance may be either inserted in the warrant or taken from the general highway fund.

Yours very truly,

S. E. EVERETT, Commissioner.

Report of Trustees of Public Library -

During the past year we have purchased 89 new volumes and one has been presented, making the total additions 90, of which 54 were fiction. The number of volumes in the library is now about 2030, of which about 1230 are works of fiction. The foregoing statement does not include a very recent and extensive addition to our works of reference. We have received from Clifford S. Drake, Esq., a gift consisting of his complete sets of "State Papers of New Hampshire" and the "Official Records of the War of the Rebellion." The two works comprise something like 160 volumes and have not as yet been cataloged or placed on our shelves.

Our reading room is supplied with the Century, St. Nicholas, Harper's and Scribners' magazines and some other publications are furnished by friends of the library.

During the year a concrete floor has been placed in the cellar, and we have done such work on the rear wall and roof as seemed necessary to prevent a recurrence of the flooding of the cellar, which had happened three times in the past two years, and was becoming a serious menace to the building and its contents.

We have nearly reached the limit of the capacity of our book stacks, and additional ones must be installed within a year or two. It may be advisable to arrange accommoda- tions for our books of reference in the reading room. We would gain considerable space by this change. A few of our books, which are of permanent value and are now in a dilap- idated condition, must be rebound in the near future.

We have all met with a great loss in the death of our very efficient librarian, Miss Lucy Mayo Warner, who died on January 30th, after a lingering illness.

39

We estimate the ordinary running expenses for the coming year as follows:

Salary of librarian

$80.00

Fuel and lighting 45.00

New books

140.00

Magazines and periodicals

15.00

Miscellaneous

20.00

$300.00

We therefore recommend that the above sum of $300.00 be raised for the running expenses of the library.

W. H. PHILBROOK, EDWARD M. SMITH, Trustees of Library.

To the Citizens of North Hampton:

Another year has passed and we submit our report of progress, trusting it may find favor in your eyes.

In the year that is now closed we have tried to serve the best interests of the people of the community and in all cases have ruled as wisely as we could.

The subject of transportation was informally discussed at the school meeting and the sentiment was in favor of trans- portation during the winter term. One thing that meeting failed to do was to vote extra funds to defray additional ex- pense along this line.

We believe we have made a wise choice of people to serve us in this capacity. Our only failing seems to be in being unable to care for the East School pupils properly. In fact we could find no one to carry the pupils, and as a result some are forced to remain at home during this term.
