ORLANDO RICHARDSON. Tuftonboro.
Tuftonboro, N. H., February 15, 1907.
We hereby certify that we have examined the foregoing accounts of the School Board and Treasurer of School District of Tuftonboro, and find them correct and properly vouched.
JAMES A. BENNETT. JOHN A. EDGERLY. Auditors.
Remarks.
The School Board are pleased to report a fairly prosperous year for the schools of Tuftonboro. Two circumstances have, however, proved real hindrances to the prosperity of certain schools.
One is the unexcused absence of some of the scholars for days and we-ks at a time. No argument is needed to show that such absences are very detrimental, not only to the truants them- selves, but also to the general interests and progress of the schools thus depleted. The law of the State places in the hands of the School Board, not only the assignment of scholars to the various schools, but also the care and duty of securing the punc- tual and faithful attendance of the pupils.
To this end, the law provides for the appointment of Truant Officers, with large powers in dealing with pupils who attend
22
REPORT OF SCHOOL BOARD.
irregularly or who absent themselves altogether. Obviously, if parents would do their duty, there would be little or no need of the services of the Truant Officer. And how much pleasanter to bring about the desired result by moral suasion, without recourse to compulsion, even though that compulsion be legal and necessary.
The School Board would now and hereby most earnestly appeal to all parents of school children in the town to see to it carefully and conscientiously that your children attend school regularly. Do not allow them to be absent a single day, if the absence can possibly be avoided. Even one day's absence makes a sad break in a child's interest and progress in his studies. By taking care in the above respect, you will greatly aid the School Board in the discharge of their duties.
Another unfortunate circumstance is the change of teachers, which was unavoidable in several of the schools. Such a change, even when from an inferior to a better teacher, is always attended with some loss and detriment.
It need not be said that the Board have earnestly sought to avoid these changes, unless absolutely necessary.
And we sincerely trust that, in the future, occasion for such changes will be very infrequent.
In conclusion may we express the hope that cordial co-opera- tion of all concerned, parents, teachers, pupils, and the School Board, may speedily bring the schools of our town to a much higher plane of efficiency and prosperity than they occupy at present.
Respectfully submitted,
JOHN W. HAYLEY. School Board D. B. PALMER. of
ORLANDO RICHARDSON. Tuftonboro.
