AUDITOR'S REPORT
We have examined the accounts for the year end- ing January 31st, 1922, of the Selectmen, Town Treasurer, Collector of Taxes, Town Clerk, Trustees of Trust Funds, Library Trustees, and Collector of Water Works Department and find them kept in a most excellent manner. H. T. MERRITT
Treasurer.
To the Trustees of the Wolfeboro Town Library,
Gentlemen :
The seventeenth annual report of the librarian is herewith presented.
The United States Commissioner of Education in a recent address makes these statements: "The world is continuously shrinking. It took Andrew Jackson thirty days to travel from Nashville, Tennessee to Washington. Today, he could reach Australia in that time by boat, and much sooner by airplane. With the shrinking of the world, comes a like shrinking of the community, and the doing away of the old American home.
We must realize that the shrinking of the world makes the community seem as small as the home once was; and the duty of all who are interested in making good citizens for our country, is to unite in making the community as safe and inspiring, and instructive as was the old American home."
These words are well worth considering in con- nection with the library, whose influence is to some extent social as well as educational. It too must ac- cept the changed conditions; and by a cultured and friendly atmosphere, by a careful selection of books, and by a well ordered room, be a place where people shall delight to come, and where they shall receive an uplifting influence.
The growing interest throughout the year has been most encouraging. There have been 18,930
44
WOLFEBORO TOWN REPORT
books circulated of these classes: fiction, 11,310; non-fiction, 2,698; children's books, 4,922. Two hundred and ninety-eight new borrower's cards have been issued.
Of the generous gifts, three deserve special men- tion, The Harvard Classics in 50 volumes donated by Charles L. Olds, Jr., of Camp Winnipesaukee; The Wood Memorial collection of music given by Miss Wood and Miss Tenney in memory of Mrs. Lucy Jane Phelps Wood; and a gift of $32.20, the proceeds from one of the summer Flower Sales.
The changes in the library room are nearing completion. These will give the much needed place for stacks, a roomy alcove for the children, and more quiet for reference work and study. At the same time, we trust, that with a change of lights the read- ing room will be none the less satisfactory.
The store room on the second floor is being made over, so that material stored there will be easy of access. We trust in the end, to have a better work- ing arrangement.
We greatly appreciate the willingness of the Brewster Trustees to provide funds for these changes.
The following is a record of the money taken at the desk during the year:

Our library is by no means perfect. There is too much disorder among the young people, and the books are too carelessly handled. A librarian cannot nag, but with the co-operation of all, improvements will gradually come. Perhaps Lincoln's immortal words are applicable to the library of today, "Of the people, for the people, and by the people."
I wish at this time to express my appreciation to all who by their assistance and sympathy have helped in the library work; and to the Trustees for their interest and counsel.
Respectfully submitted, ELIZABETH BREWSTER
Librarian.
