CHRONOLOGY OF KEENE, 1733-1895.

-July 1, on recommendation of Gov. Belcher, the General Court of Massachusetts voted, " that there be seven towns opened of the contents of six miles square," including two on Ashuelot river, and appointed a committee to lay out the same.

-February, the committee made a return of a plan of two townships, situated on both sides of Ashuelot river, which were styled Upper and Lower Ashuelot; the lower township was afterwards named Swanzey, and the upper one Keene. June 26, the house lots on Main street divided among sixty-three proprietors. September IS, first town meeting held in the open air by seven of the proprietors.

-Voted to lay out road to the "Saw Mill Place " ( situated on Beaver Brook) and give 100 acres of land and twenty-five pounds to any person who would build the mill.

-- September 30, at a proprietors' meeting held at house of Nathan Blake, being the first ereeted in the township, voted to build meeting house and grist-mill; to widen Main street from four to eight rods in width ; Nathan Blake, Seth Heaton and William Smede propose to winter in the settlement, but are obliged to abandon it, leaving their oxen, which they find alive on their return the following spring.

-May 12, voted to assess sixty pounds, old tenor, on lot owners for support of minister. October 26, lands divided among proprietors in lots of 100 acres.

October 2, voted to finish the fort already begun, and situated nearly on the present site of the house of Hon. Edward Gustine. October 18, Rev. Mr. Bacon ordained. Decem- ber 4, voted to finish meeting house ; great flood this year, highest water ever known in township.

-February 25, rumors of war; voted to build another fort for defence against Indians.

-- September 7, voted to move meeting house on the hill, which hill was where the Gen. Wilson house now stands.

-July 27, voted to improve meeting house, shingle the same, and set the glass for the windows in wood.

-March, first French war breaks out; settlers prepare for defence against Indians ; throat distemper rages with great fatality in the settle- ment.

-February 5, voted 154 pounds, old tenor, as salary for Rev. Mr. Bacon ; settlers continue to prepare for defence. July 10, Deacon Josiah Fisher killed by Indians on the ground which is now Gen. S. G. Griffin's garden. 1746-March, voted to raise 160 pounds, old tenor (133.33), for Rev. Mr. Bacon's support. April 23, at early morning, a large band of Indians appear ; alarm is given, and all fly for safety to the fort ; Mrs. McKenney and John Bullard are killed near the gate of the fort, before entering ; the Indians surround the fort and the battle rages till noon, when the enemy retire; nine of their number are killed; Nathan Blake is cap- tured and carried to Canada. May, Indians again appear, but the settlers protect themselves within the fort.

-Early in the year the settlers abandon the settlement as untenable ; soon after, Indians appear and burn the town containing forty dwellings. Thus ended the first settlement of Keene.
