The Reading Room connected is open from 9 A. M. to 9 P. M each week day, and from 5 to 9 on Sundays. It was in- eorporated and went into operation September. 1854, during the mayoralty of Hon. Frederick Sinyth, and is free to every citizen of the place on the following conditions : -


1. Any such resident, of the age of twenty-one years and up- wards, may deposit with the Librarian the value of any book he may desire to take, to be estimated by the Librarian, either in money or other sufficient property in the judgment of the Li- brarian. Such deposit shall be evidenced by a ticket showing its object, a copy of which shall be entered on a book by the Librarian. It shall be restored to the depositor on the return of the book or books taken, and payment of all fines and damages for negligence or injury, and return of such ticket. In case such book is not returned, and such fines and damages paid, such deposit shall be forfeited to the city. Neither the city, the Trustees, or the Librarian, shall be liable for any loss or injury to the property so pledged, unless it arise from their gross negli- gence or fault.


2. Or any such resident, of the age of sixteen years and up- wards, may file with the Librarian a guaranty of some responsible person, known to the Librarian, agreeing to be answerable for the safe return of all books borrowed by him, uninjured, and for the payment of all fines and damages incurred by him. Such guaranty shall be valid for the time mentioned therein, but may be revoked by the signer at any time, at his pleasure, by a no- tice in writing given to the Librarian, in which case his liability shall cease, except as to books previously taken, and fines and damages previously incurred .- Rules of Board of Trustees.


The Library contains a well-assorted collection of books in every department of the English language, of 6,300 volunies. Constant additions are made from time to time.

parade " and " social enjoyments," adopting for their uniform the style of dress worn by the officers of the Revolution. In June, 1855, they received from the Legislature an act of incor- poration, creating them a distinct battalion, limited to two hun -; dred and fifty, rank and file.

This department comprises the following, viz. : three shops, one foundry, one boiler-shop, one tank-shop, and one paint- shop ; each containing the most improved tools adapted to all! branches of mechanical manufactures. Employ annually 500 men. There is consumed at the works every year, 2000 tons of pig iron, 1000 tons of bar iron and steel, 150 tons of copper, 75 tons of brass and malleable castings, 300 tons of boiler and tank iron, 600 tons of Lehigh coal, 600 tons of Cumberland ( English) coal, 5000 bushels of charcoal, 4000 gallons of oil, and 1,200 cords of wood. They turn out 5 locomotives per month, make ma- chinery for a mill of 20,000 spindles annually, besides a large amount of transient castings and forging for others to put into mill work and machinery.

MANCHESTER PRINT WORKS.

The establishment then passed under the management of Wm. P. Newell, Esq., the Agent of the Delaine Mills, who resigned in 1852. On the 22d of Sep- tember, 1853, the works were entirely destroyed by fire, but were immediately rebuilt.

The Gas Works are situated in the southerly part of the city, near the M. & L. Railroad, and built of brick, with slated roofs. Fourteen miles of pipe, varying from 14 to 2 inches in diameter, have been laid, extending to different parts of the city. The company are able to furnish 150,000 cubic feet of gas every 24 hours, though the pipes arc of sufficient capacity and strength for double that amount. Between 13,000 and 20,000 tons of' gas coal are consumed in a year, producing between 12,000,000 and 14,000,000 cubic feet of gas. The number of burners in mills is about 5,500 ; in houses, stores, &c., near 8,000 ; besides 107 street lamps. The gas is sold at the rate of $3.25 per 1,000 cubic feet.
