CHURCH ACCOUNT.


The following items describe the efforts of the newly formed town to promote the advance of the gospel.

EPSOM


May 20, 1742, it was "Voted that there shall be thirty pounds money Raised by the Proprietors and inhabitants for the highering of a minister, that the Gospel may be promoted in the aforesd. town of Epsom."


June 8, 1743, "A vote was past by the Proprietors and Inhabitants of Epsom to Raise forty Pounds for the support of a minister, that the Gospel might be promoted among us."


May 2, 1750, it was "Voted there should be money Raised for the support of the Gospel Fifty Pounds, old Tennor."


April 23, 1760, it was "Voted one hundred pounds, old tenor, in money be raised to hire minister or defray charges."


June 25, 1761, a meeting was held at which the following action was taken concerning religious matters: John Tueke was chosen minister. He was voted a settlement of one hun- dred aeres of land, "thirty pounds starling" as a salary for the first two years, with an additional five pounds for the fol- lowing two years, thirty cords of wood should be cut and hauled to his house each year. 600 pounds, old tenor, was also voted to build a house for the minister, to be paid in labor if Mr. Tueke should accept the eall.


Mr. Tueke accepted the call by letter under the date of August 17, 1761.


On April 19, 1764, the town voted to build a meeting house fifty by forty feet and chose the following committee : Isaac Libby, sen., Thomas Blake, John McClary, George Wallace and Nathan Marden.


This church was occupied by the Congregationalists till 1820, when other societies claimed the right to hold meetings there also.

HISTORICAL


From this time on for several years there was controversy between the Congregationalists and other denominations. In 1845, the Congregationalists erected a new church at what was locally known as "Slab City." The old meeting house was sold and moved to Concord.

FREE WILL BAPTIST.


This church was organized in June, 1824, by Revs. E. Knowlton and Arthur Coverno, with eight members as fol- lows: Rev. A. Coverno, Nathan Bickford, Daniel Philbrick, Ephraim Locke, Lucretia Tarlton, Mary Marden, Elizabeth Currier, and Sally Osgood. Under Mr. Coverno's charge the society increased that season to fifty members. The society continued to grow and prosper. Two churches have been built, one in 1833 and the other in 1861. A comfortable parsonage was provided.

CHRISTIAN SOCIETY.


This church was founded by Edwin T. Philbrick, a black- smith, in 1859. He was its first pastor. The most of the mem- bers of this new church came from Epsom but had been attend- ing services in Allenstown. It was decided to build a new church in Epsom and the summer of 1861 saw the structure completed and the new society firmly established. After sev- eral years Mr. Philbrick was succeeded by Rev. J. P. Stinch- field, a Methodist minister for one year from 1869. Other sup- plies were : Benjamin Dickson, M. M. Cleverly, Geo. D. Gar- land, James Phillips, E. C. Cogswell. Since the 80's there has been but little activity in this society.


ADVENT CHURCH.


The Advent Church at Short Falls was organized August 18, 1894. Clarence E. Kendall was chosen elder and continued as such till his death in 1903. Since that time no regular elder has been installed, though William Brown has been active in the work of the society.

CHARTER OF THE TOWN BY THE KING.


"George, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith :-


"To all the people to whom these presents shall come, Greeting.


"Know ye, that of our special knowledge, for the en- couragement of settling a plantation, by and with the consent of our Council-have given, and by these presents do give and grant in equal shares, unto our beloved subjects, whose names are entered in a schedule, that inhabit or shall inhabit within the said grant, all that tract of land within the follow- ing bounds : Beginning at the head of the town of Chichester, and to run Northwest by the town of Gilmanton to the Winni- piseogee Pond; then from the first mentioned place, south west seven miles on the head of the aforesaid Chichester; thence Northwest to the river that comes out of the great Pond afore- said; then by the river to the second-mentioned bound. That the same be a town corporate by the name of Canterbury. To have and to hold the said land forever, upon the following con- ditions : First. That the Proprietors, within three years, build seventy dwelling-houses and settle a family in each, and clear three acres of land fit for planting or sowing. Second. That

a meeting-house be built within four years. Third. If any Proprietor neglect, he shall forfeit his share of the land. Fourth. That a share be reserved for the Ministry of the Gospel, another for a Parsonage, and another for the benefit of the schools in town.


Provided, that if war break out with the Indians within three years, then three years shall be allowed them after the war, rendering therefore to us or our officers the Annual Rent of one pint of corn in the said town on the first Thursday in March yearly forever, reserving also all mast trees growing on said land, according to the Aet of Parliament in that case made and provided. For the calling of the first meeting, we do ap- point Paul Gerrish, Paul Wentworth and John Smith, Select- men of said town, and that they continue in said office until the third of Thursday of March, 1728, when others shall be chosen in their stead. In testimony whereof, we have caused the seal of our Province to be affixed.

don, as passed in the House of Representatives, January 22, 1773 :


"Whereas, a number of the inhabitants of Canterbury, in the County of Rockingham in this Province, have petitioned the General Assembly to be set off and erected into a distinct Parish agreeable to a vote of said town set forth in said peti- tion, and after due notice thereof being given, no person hath appeared to oppose the same, and the same appearing for the public good. Therefore, be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Assembly, that all that part of the town of Canterbury, be- ginning at the northeast corner thereof, at the Buckhorn Beech- tree; thence southwest on the head line of Chichester eight miles to the line between Canterbury and Bow; thence on the line between said Canterbury and Bow, five miles; thence across said Canterbury, northeast eight miles, to Gilmanton line; and by that to the bounds first mentioned, be and is hereby set off from said town of Canterbury, and erected into and established to be a distinct and separate parish by the name of Loudon, and that the Inhabitants thereof be invested with all powers and privileges by law invested in any Parish within this Province, and are fully exempt from paying further tax to the town of Canterbury.


"And Nathan Bachelder of said Parish, is hereby Author- ized and empowered to call the first meeting of said Parish of Loudon for the choice of Parish Officers, by setting up a noti- fication thereof in some public place in said Parislı fourteen days beforehand, and to govern said meeting until a Moderator be chosen, and then they are to proceed to the choice of officers as the law directs.

The first meeting of inhabitants of the parish of Loudon was called and held at the house of Abraham Baehelder, Jr., on the 23d day of March, 1773, by a warrant under the hand and seal of Nathan Bachelder. The business to be transaeted was as follows :


"1st. To choose a Moderator for said Meeting.


"2nd. To choose a Parish Clerk, Selectmen, Constable and all other Parish officers as the law directs for the ensuing year.


"3rd. To see if the said Freeholders and Inhabitants will agree upon and vote to raise a sum of money this present year for the benefit of the Gospel in said Parish.


"4th. To see if said Freeholders and Inhabitants will

"6th. To see if the said Freeholders and Inhabitants will vote the sum of thirty-two dollars, which his Excellency John Wentworth was pleased to give in when signing the charter of the Parish of Loudon, the same having been worked out on some highway in said Parish.


"7th. To agree upon and see how much money shall be raised this present year for highways in said Parish.


"8th. To see if the Freeholders and Inhabitants will agree upon and vote to fall Twenty acres of trees on the Par- sonage lot this present year in said Parish.
