DEERFIELD

Benjamin Butler, a soldier in the Revolution, afterwards Adjutant-General in New Hampshire, who died May 12, 1828, aged 68, kept a public house in "ye olden times," where judge Ira St Clair died.

PHYSICIANS.

The first physician of Deerfield worthy of note was Dr. Edmund Chadwick. He came to Deerfield in 1779 and prac- ticed his profession. He was considered a very skillful physi- cian, was chosen in 1782 as a delegate to join in convention to frame and organize a permanent system of government. In 1788, he was chosen a delegate to Exeter, and was also a Rep- resentative to the General Court at Concord. He died Nov. 8. 1826, aged 75 years.

Thomas Brown practiced first at Epping, then at the Parade. He died in Manchester of cholera. Dr. Stephen Brown succeeded Thomas in 1831, and continued to practice until enfeebled by sickness, he was compelled to give up the practice and died in April, 1874. He was succeeded by Dr. George H. Towle, who has occupied the field for nearly 40 years. Several other physicians during the time have prac- ticed for short periods in Deerfield, viz .: Fogg, Graves, Thresher, Hidden, Young, Haynes, Gale, Newell and others.

PROMINENT MEN.

This town has furnished many prominent men to go forth into the different callings of life. It was the birthplace of Gen. B. F. Butler, who was a noted general in the Civil War,

and was a member of Congress from Massachusetts, also once Governor of the State. Hon. John D. Philbrick, for several years was superintendent of the public schools of Boston. He, in connection with Hon. Fred James of New York presented the Philbrick-James library, containing many volumes, to the town. Many volumes have since been added by various indi- viduals, until now it contains a large assortment of books and magazines. It is now in charge of Carrol E. Legro, the effi- cient librarian, who has served as such for the past few years. Mr. Philbrick also gave a fund to the town of about $4,000, three-fourths of the income to be used for the support of the library, and one-fourth for the support of the school in his native district, Number One.

Hon. Fred P. James of New York, a native of this town, gave a fine school building to his native district, Number Six, in this town. This town has furnished the State Legislature at different times with several Senators, including Judge Rich- ard Jenness, Hon. Joseph J. Dearborn, Richard Jenness, 2nd, Dr. George H. Towle, G. F. Miller, James G. Fellows, J. B. Tennant, who were natives of this town. To Governor G. W. Weston's Council in 1874, Hon. John S. Robinson was elected. He died in November, 1907, aged 86 years. Hon. J. B. Tennant was a member of the Council of a former Governor and County Commissioner several years in Merrimack County and Repre- sentative to the Legislature, as has Hon. J. G. Fellows, who is now a member of Governor Quinby's Council, and a former County Commissioner. Hon. John Jenness, a native of this town (but a long resident of Boston) was a State Sen- ator here in 1849 and 1850. He accumulated a large property

including one of the finest farms in town now owned and occu- pied by the Hon. John J. Cilley. At the time of his death in 1872, he gave $5,000 to the town, the interest to be expended for school purposes. Several eminent ministers were born here, who have gone forth to labor in their high calling. Among them are the names of Jeremiah Tilton and his brother, Holden, Rice R. Whittier, Elbridge Goodhue, Freeman P. Lang, Enoch P. Ladd, Samuel Goodhue, Leroy Griffin-but a few of these are living at the present time.

Nathaniel Weare, son of President Weare, was town clerk here for thirty-one years. G. M. Weare, who died Nov. 6, 1908, aged 87 years, a life-long resident of this town was his grand- son.

In 1897, the members of Union Lodge, No. 32, erected a large and commodious building, suitably proportioned for a store in the lower story, lodge and ante rooms on the second floor and a fine banquet room on the third floor, all at a cost, of rising $3,000, leaving no debt to be paid in the future. This lodge was instituted Nov. 9, 1849. During these years nearly 200 names have been written on its roll book, a large majority of whom have gone out to return no more. On Nov. 9, 1899,

the fiftieth anniversary of the institution of the lodge was observed with appropriate cermony, the grand officers being present. At the same time, the new hall was dedicated with impressive services by Grand Master Welch. Grand Secretary Kidder and other brothers, high up in the Order from Man- chester. This was the last of many visits which the Grand Secretary had made. For many years previously he had often visited "old Union Lodge.

Silver Lake Rebekah Lodge, No. 50, was instituted Nov. 16, 1892, by the grand officers with 26 charter members. Many names have since been added to its membership. Its meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.

The G. A. R. Post, which once had on its roll the names of nearly 40 comrades, has been reduced in numbers by death until now it has but ten members remaining, but unlike other orders it has no field to reeruit from. Inevitable dissolution is all that it can look forward to.

History of northwood

INDIAN ACCOUNT.

The town of Northwood in the exciting times of Indian warfare suffered from the unfriendliness of some of the Indian tribes. Small parties of the enemy concealed themselves on or near her borders, and made great havoc among the cattle, horses, sheep and other domestic animals. So far as known, only one tribe located within the town limits, at the head of that tribe was a chief, called Swansen. He was disposed to be friendly to the settlers, yet did not at all times check the sav- age nature and deeds of the members of his tribe. As an ex- ample of the constant suspieion and watehfulness under which the early settlers lived, the following example is recorded :-

"About the year 1747, one Davis, of Durham, went to Nottingham to remove boards from the mills, having loaded his team consisting of four oxen, he left a boy to drive the team, and went forward for the purpose of making discoveries. He soon saw the prints of huge moccasins in the sand. He was filled with terror, believing that he was ambushed on every hand. He did not lose his presence of mind, but hurried back and unyoked the oxen, and calling for the boy to follow, made all possible speed for home. A company of armed men soon returned to the spot and were surprised to find the cattle browsing, and all unhurt. The tracks in the sand were those of

105

HISTORICAL

Chief Swansen and one of his men, who had been hunting. They heard the team, but thought a large number of men were with it, and went directly for reinforcements. When the In- dians returned to the team they found the oxen feeding and feared it was a stratagem to draw them into an ambush and fled in fear as Davis had done. This account was given after the war by members of the tribe which had been located in Northwood.

EARLY SETTLEMENT AND SETTLERS.

In 1762, four men, Moses Godfrey, John and Increase Batchelder and Moses Bickford, came from the towns of North Hampton and Lee to establish homes in the uninhabited region of what became in a few years, the town of Northwood. These pioneers were brave, rugged and ambitious men, and selected such places as would be best adapted to make homes for them- selves and the friends whom they expected soon to follow them, after which they returned to their homes to prepare to occupy their new homes in the following year.

On the 25th day of the following March (1763) Godfrey and the Batchelders returned to occupy the land they had chosen. Theirs was the first frame house built in Northwood ..

Solomon Bickford, son of Deacon Asa Bickford, was born June 25, 1764, and was the first child born in the present limits of Northwood. The industrious, sturdy pioneers were soon followed by many noble, ambitious men, who soon realized the

advantages to be gained by forming a settlement of their own.

ORGANIZATION OF THE TOWN.

From 1722 until 1773, Northwood formed a part of Deer- field. In 1773, a petition was presented by the inhabitants for an act of incorporation and this was granted February 6th, at the session of the General Court.

Benjamin Johnson was authorized to call the first meeting of the town for the choice of officers and the transaction of other business. A meeting was called for Mar. 23, 1773, at which Benjamin Johnson was chosen moderator; Increase Batchelder, clerk; and Benjamin Hill, Joseph Demerit, and Samuel Johnson, selectmen; Moses Godfrey was chosen con- stable. The selectmen were instructed to settle with Notting- ham, matters growing out of the act of incorporation, while Ansel Blake and Wm. Blake were tithing men; Wm. Wallace and John Harvey, fence viewers; Jonathan Knowlton, Asel Blake, Solomon Bickford and Daniel Hoitt were surveyors of highways; Zeblon Norris and John Harvey were chosen hog reeves; Solomon Bickford, leather sealer.

NORTHWOOD

1908-J. G. Towle, Fred C. Giles, Loren E. Swain.

TOWN TREASURERS.

For many years after Northwood became a town, it was the custom of the selectmen to elect one of their number as treasurer. During 1887, and for several years prior, Henry Knowlton was elected treasurer. From 1888 until the present the office has been filled by Albert H. Moore, town clerk.

SCHOOLS.

The building of schoolhouses early received the attention of the town. In 1792, district schools were established.

Northwood Academy was incorporated in February, 1866. In June, 1875, the charter was so amended that the institution should hereafter be known by the name of "Coe's Northwood Academy," in honor of Ebenezer Coe, Esq., for many years a highly respected merchant and Christian gentleman, whose heart and hand were ready to aid every good cause, and whose son, E. S. Coe, Esq., of Bangor, Me., has sustained the interest begun by his worthy father.

For many years the Academy flourished under the care of Rev. E. C. Cogswell, a graduate of Dartmouth College. Many have gone from Coe's Northwood Academy to seek advanced education in various colleges, to lead lives of use- fulness elsewhere; but to retain their interest in, and loyalty for their home academy.
