NOTE .-- The title of vol. 2 reads "The Northern Monthly, devoted to the vigorous discussion of topics of to-day." Intended to be a distinc- tively New Jersey magazine, it was started by Captain Bassett atter receiving numerous pledges of support from the N. J. State Literary Union, the Washington Literary Union and other similar societies. Captain Bassett was assisted by Samuel H. Baldwin, Edward Lees Glen, the artist, and others. The pledges of support not materializing, the plant was moved from Academy and Broad streets, Newark, to 37 Park Row, New York, where, under the name of the Northern Monthly, the magazine gradually won its way to an almost paying basis, when Captain Bassett became seriously ill. Receiving an offer from the proprietors of the newly started Putnam's Magazine, he sold the subscription list and all rights ; and the number for June, 1868, was the last issued, two numbers after the close of the second volume. The consolidation of the two periodicals is mentioned in Putnam's Magazine for July, 1868, p. 126.
