is uncertainty. The Report for 1883 styles itself the IIth annual, indi- cating that the first was made in 1873. In 1877 the institution was entitled the "Essex County Lunatic Asylum;" in 1878 the " Essex County Home for the Insane." This was changed in 1880 to "Essex County Asylum for the Insane," and in 1895 to " Essex County Hospi- tal for the Insane." On the opening of the branch hospital at Verona, the name was once more changed (in 1899) to "Essex County Hospitals for the Insane."
