Tenth Regiment.' This regiment was organized under the provisions of an act of Congress approved July 22, 1861, and by authority issued by the War Department, Washington, D. C., direct to private in- dividuals resident of this State, and not in any way under the control or supervision of the State authori- ties. I'nder authority thus given, recruiting w: s commeneed and its organization soon completed. It was then accepted by the War Department as an independent organization, having been designated the Olden Legion. The regiment went into camy at Beverly, & J. and from thence proceeded to Washington, Dec. 26, 181, with a full complement of men and officer, and went into camp at Camp

Clay, on the Bladensburg turnpike, one mile from Washington. Jan. 29, 1802, an onlor was issued from the War Department transferring the regiment to the State authorities. It was then thoroughly rourgantred, and designated the Truth Regiment New Jersey Volunteers April × 12, Company (, which had been recruited and minatored as a cavalry company, was mustered out of service, and a company of intan- try was recruited in this State to fill the vacancy, and forwarded to Washington, June ty, Indy, The greater part of the early services of the regiment were per- formed in and around Washington, 11, U, on provost duty.


April 12, 1367, the regiment was ordered to Suffolk, Va., to resist an anticipated attack of the enemy at that point. In July, Isak, it was ordered to Philladel. phia, Pa, to assist in the draft at that time, and in the fall of the same year was undered to the mining regions of Peumsylvania to appfra riula, and April 19, 1864, was assigned to active duty with the Army if the Pramac, and proceedat to Mirandy Station, where it wie attachedto the First Now Jorany Brigade.
