Frederick G. Conover


Frederick G. Conover, a former resident of Freehold, died on Wed- nesday at Goschen, N. Y., where he has lived for the past several years. His body will be brought to the W. H. Freeman funeral home on East Main Street, from where arrangements will be announced later. He is survived by onc son, Carl G. Conover.


Mr. Conover and family formerly lived at the corner of Lincoln Place and Kiawa Avenue. For a number of years prior to his moving away, he was employed as collector for the County Gas Company. His i wife, Blanche Stillwell Conover, died several years ago 9/21/39


Peter Conover


Peter Conover, 70 years old, dird, on Sunday evening at the Briar Hill Home. He was a former lesi- dent of Freehold, Funeral servle -! es were held yesterday at 2 o'clock at the A. M. Mrs. Conover is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Angle D. Jobes of Trenton, and Mrs. S. Elwood Cro- shaw of Hightstown; and one bro- ther, John O. Buekelew of Marl- boro. Mrs. Conover was the daugh- ter of the late . John P. and Mary Ann Griggs Buckelew.

Mrs. Conover is survived, in add- ition to the daughter mentioned, by three sons, William R. and Joseph E of near. Freehold; George W. of Highland Park; one sister, Mrs. Arthur Stillwell of Hull Avenue, here: and one brother, Frank Er- riekson of near Belmar.


She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Errickson of near Georgia School House. She lived most of her life in the West Freehold section, where her hus- band, who died ten years ago, was a well known farmer.


Mrs. Conover was a member of the First Baptist Church of Free- hold and of the Freehold Woman's Club. 15/12/39

Private funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:30 p. m., at the home of her sister, Mrs. Charles D. B. Forman, here, with the Rev. William L. Sahler officiating. She was the daughter of the late John B. and Mary A. Conover.

Mrs. Lydia Jane Cottrell, aged 69 years, widow of Joseph Walter Cottrell, a former Freehold con- stable, died on Wednesday morn-1 ing at the Welfare Home at Briar Hill. Her body was removed to the C. H. T. Clayton & Son funeral home at Adelphia, where funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Inter- ment will be in the Perrineville cemetery.


Mrs. Cottrell is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Burdge of Adelphia, and Mrs. Agnes Jones of Burlington; one son, Eimer Cot- trell of Red Bank; eight grand- children, and one great-grancchild. She was born at Smithburg, the daughter of George W. Stillwell and Jane Cottrell, and lived In Free- hold most of her life. 1/30/34


Eugene T. Connolly 4-20039 Eugene T. Connolly, aged 44 years, a resident of Carr Avenue, Keansburg, died on Monday at the Allenwood hospital. Funeral ser- vices were held this (Thursday) morning from the C. H. T. Clayton & Son funeral home at Adelphia, and at 9 o'eloek at St. Ann's R. C. church, Keansburg, with requiem mass being celebrated by the pastor, Rev. J. J. Lucitt. Interment will be made in Calvary cemetery at Brooklyn, by Director Clayton. Mr. Connolly is survived by three chil- dren, Eleanora, Eugene, and Ruth, .all of Carr Avenue, Keansburg.


Patrick Cunniff


Patrick Cunniff, aged 68 years, died on Thursday at his home at Bradevelt. His body was removed to the W. H. Freeman funeral home here. Funeral services were held on Monday morning at eight o'clock at the Freeman funeral home, and at nine o'clock at St. Gabriel's Catholic church, Brade- velt, with requiem mass being cele- brated by the pastor, Rev. Louis F. Cogan. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery by Director Freeman.

Funeral services for Cecil Cooper were held on Saturday at 10:30 at the VanSant Colonial Home with the Rev. Walter J. Lake, officiating. Interment was in the State Hospital Cemetery, Marlboro.


Mr. Cooper was 75 years old and formerly resided in Perth Anthoy. He deid last Thursday at the Marl- boro State Hospital.

Ellwood Crammer


Funeral services for Ellwood Crammer will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Free- man funeral home on East Main street, with the Rev. Walter J. Lake, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be in Perrineville cemetery.


Mr. Crammer was born in Rob- binsville on May 21, 1873, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Crammer. He committed suicide by hanging himself in the garage of his brother, Samuel Crammer, at Holmdel, on Tuesday. In addition to the brother, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary Kirby of Per- rineville. 2-12-42


Franklin Delano Covert


Franklin Delano Covert, aged 66 years, died last Thursday evening at his home at Fair Haven. Funeral services were held on Sunday af- ternoon at the Fair Haven M. E. church, followed by interment in Fairview cemetery, Red Bank, in charge of Funeral Director C. H. T. Clayton & Son of Adelphia.


He is survived by his wife, and three sisters, Mrs. E. Henry Board- man, and the Misses Lavinia and Julia Covert, all of Fair Haven.


Mr. Covert was born in Brook- lyn on June 17, 1883, the son of William L. and Elizabeth Covert. but has lived practically ail of his life at Fair Haven. He was married to Catherine A. Tilton of Squan- kum, who survives him. He was educated at Mrs. Perkins' School at Red Bank, and the New York Military Academy at Cornwall-on- the-Hudson.


He was always interested in the civic affairs of his community, and was instrumental in having Fair


Haven incorporated as a borough, ind served for seven years as its nayor. He had also served as a member of the Shrewsbury Board of Education for a number of years. He was a member or the Jr. O. U. A. M., Navesink Lodge, No. 39; I. O. O. F., and an exempt member of the fire department of Fair Haven. 11/30/39

Mrs. Nora Chamberlain, aged 65 years, who formerly lived on Mc- Lean Street, here, died on Satur- day at her home at 409 Atlantic Avenue, Spring Lake. Howard Cooper


Howard "Bud" Cooper, aged 60 years, a former resident of Free- hold, died on Monday at his home at 224 Joline Avenue, Long Branch. He was a conductor for the Cen- tral Railroad Company of New Jer- sey, for the past 38 years.


Mr. Cooper was born in Freehold, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Cooper. He has lived in Long Branch for the past 20 years. He was a member of the exempt fire-| men's association, of Freehold, and during his funeral on Wednesday afternoon, the fire bell at the Mun- icipal Building herc was tolled.


He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Reginald Blair and Mrs. John Kath, hoth of Long Branch; two sisters, Mrs. Allle Sprague of West Creek, and Mrs. Bertha Morris of Long Branch. and one brother, Frank Coore". of Point Pleasant. His wife, nee Florence Horner, died last April.

John F. Conine, aged 85 years, well known miller at Allentown for the past 43 years, died at his home there on Saturday morning. Fu- neral services were held on Wed- nesday afternoon at his late home, followed by interment in Adelphia cemetery in charge cf Funeral Di- rector C. H. T. Clayton & Son of. Adelphia.

Joyce Ann Coley


Funeral services for Joyce Ann Coley, 214 months old, were held on Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock, from the honte of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Coley of near Freehold. Interment was in the Freehold Catholic cemetery by Richard VanSant.


The child died on Sunday in the Fitkin Hospital, Neptune. It has been in failing health since birth. Besides the parents, the chld Is sur- vived by three sisters, Mary Ellen, Margaret and Wilma, all at home.

Mrs. Laura B. Conklin


Mrs. Laura B. Conklin, aged 70 years, of Lakewood, died on Sun- day morning at the Florence Nurs- ing Home, where she had been taken on Friday. She was the wid- ow of Cornelius A. Conklin. Fu- neral services were held on Wed- nesday at 1:30 p. m. at her late home and at 2 p. m. from the First Presbyterian church, of which she! was a member, with the Rev. Al- bert H. Manus officiating. Inter- ment was made in the family plot at Harmony by C. H. T. Clayton & Son, of Adelphla.


Mra. Conklin was born in Har- mony, the daughter of James and Mary A. Matthews Clayton. She was an active church worker and was Instrumental in the organiza- tion of. the Junior Needlework Guild, 28 years ago, which held weekly summer classes in sewing, until this year.


She is survived by one son, Ed- ward R. Conklin, a member of the Butler high school faculty; four sisters, Mrs. Harry Davison, Jer- seyville; Mrs. Della Sparks and Mrs. Margaret Clayton, botn of Lakewood, and Mrs. Annie Mat- thews of Freehold. 10-19-3% i


Joseph Champlin


Joseph Champlin, aged 71 years, died suddenly on Friday evening at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Hilman Hendrickson of Coxe's Corner. He had been in ill health for some time. Survivors besides the daugh- ter mentioned, include two other daughters, Mrs. George Patterson and Mrs. Harvey Underhill of Tren- ton; a son, Harold, of Narragansett, R. I .; a sister, Miss Ada M. Champ- lin of Cincinnati, Ohio, and three grandchildren, Naomi and Ruth Champlin and Audrey Underhill.


Funeral services were held on Tuesday, conducted by Rev. W. D. Thatcher, pastor of the First Bap- tist Church, and Rev. H. D. S .! Coates, pastor of the Allentown! Baptist church. Interment was in the Allentown Presbyterian Ceme- tery. 2-28-39


William M. Calver


William M. Calver, aged 30 years, was found dead last Friday after- noon in his parked car on the out- skirts of Red Bank. He had com- mitted suicide by leading a hose from the exhaust to the interior of his car.


Funeral services were held on Monday morning at St. James Catholic Church at Red Bank, with requiem mass being celebrated by the pastor, Rev. J. B. MeCloskey. Interment was made in St. Gabri- el's Cemetery, Bradevelt, in charge of Funeral Director W. H. Free- man.


He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Calver, of 97 Leonard Avenue, Red Bank; two brothers, James and Joseph, also of Red Bank, and one cister, Mrs. James Higgins of New York City. -- 2-23-39

Frank Cuddihy, aged 33 years, i was killed on Sunday evening, when istruck by a car on the Freehold- Lakewood road. The accident oc- curred about 9:30 o'clock as Mr. Cuddihy attempted to cross the road about a mile south of Adel- phia in Howell Township.


Funeral services for Mr. Cuddihy were held on Wednesday morning, at 8:30 at the Freeman funeral home, and at 9 o'clock at St. Rose of Lima Catholic church here, where requiem mass was celebrated hy Rev. James Child. assistant pas- tor. Burial was made in the Free- hold Catholic cemetery. Mr. Cud- dihy, who was employed as a farm laborer in the Adelphia and Georgia Schoolhouse area, is survived hy - two brothers and one sister, John; and Michael Cuddihy and Mrs. Ed- ward J. Carver, all of Georgia Schoolhouse.


The accident was investigated by State Police from the Farmingdale barracks.

Mrs. Emma M. Clayton, aged 50 years, an employee at the State Hospital at Marlboro, died there early Friday morning. She was the widow of Harry N. Clayton, and was born at Adelphia, the daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivins Mat- thews.


. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the C. H. T. Clayton & Son funeral home at Adelphia, with Rev. Otis F. Van- Brunt officiating. Interment was made 'in Adelphia cemetery by Di- rector Clayton. ' She is survived hy one son, George Clayton, Belmar; three daughters, the Misses Doro- thy, Laura C., and Irene, at home; and her father, Ivins Matthews of Adelphia.

Fu- neral services will be held on Sun- day afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at her late home, and at 2 o'clock at the Colts Neck Reformed church, with Rev. Peter M. Boelhouwer, pastor, officiating. Interment will be made in Old Tennent cemetery in charge of Funeral Director C. H .; T. Clayton & Son of Adelphia.


She is survived hy three daugh- ters, the Misses Hazel M., Mildred B. and Vanolia Clayton, at home; one brother, James H. VanMater of Colis Neck; and two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Bedle of Avon, and Mrs. Laura Mitchell of Colts Neck.


Henry Clayton


Funeral services for Henry Clay- ton were held Friday afternoon at the VanSant colonial home, with the Rev. G. G. Horn, Th.D., pastor of the local Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment was in Map- lewood cemetery.


Mr. Clayton, who was 84 years old, was a native of this section and had farmed for a number of years. He died last Tuesday at his home at Harmony. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Leming Clayton. 4-2-42


Dr. John C. Clayton Dies Suddenly


Freehold Physician For Past 30 Years


Dr. John C. Clayton, for 30 years a physician in Frechold, die, sud- denly on Saturday at the I ince- ton hospital, where he was taken that afternoon after suffering a heart attack while attending the Princeton-Navy football game at Palmer Stadium, there.


Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at his late home at 73 West Main Street, with the Rev. Randall W. Conklin, pastor of Trinity Episcopal church, Asbury Park, officiating. Interment was made in Maplewood cemetery in charge of Funeral Director. W. H.I Freeman. The hearers were Dr. James Fisher, Dr. Charles D. Prout, Dr. C. A. Pons, Dr. O. K. Parry, and Dr. Kenneth Brown, all of As- bury Park; and Dr. B. W. Moffatt' of Red Bank, all associates on the staff at Fitkin hospital.


He is survived by his wife, nee Isabella T. Atkinson of Hawley, Pa .; and two daughters, Mrs. Louis F. Albright of Spring Lake, and Barbara Louise Clayton at home.


Dr. Clayton was horn at Prince- ton, 57 years ago. After receiving his eudcation in the public schools there, he graduated from the Unt-' versity of Pennsylvania medical school in 1907. Serving the next, two years as an interne in the U. S .. Naval Hospital at Washington, he then came to Freehold, to begin his practice. It was interrupted during the World War, from 1917 to 1919, when he served in the navy. He has since held the rank of lieutenant commander in the naval reserve medical corps.


Dr. Clayton was cardiologist at Fitkin hospital at Neptune for sev- eral years. He was a past president and former secretary of the Men- mouth Medical Society, and in 1931 was elected a fellow in the Ameri- can College of Physicians.


Dr. Clayton was a descendant of many of the pioneer families of the county. He was the son of John M. Clayton, a druggist at Princeton, and Clara Hutchinson Clayton. He was a member of Monmouth Post No. 54, and a mem- ber of Olive Branch Lodge of Mas- ons, cf Frecchold."


He was accompanied at the zoot- hall game hy Mrs. Clayton, And their son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Albright.


In 1933, Dr. Clayton was appoint- ed physician for the county jail here, and held that position until January 1, of this year, when he was replaced by Dr. D. S. Carey. Since the appointment is Geemcd a political one, Dr. Clayton contested his removal, and on July o, the state civil service commission or- dered his re-instatement. 11/30/39

Miss Frances B. Clayton, aged 24, died on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 15, at her home in Englishtown. During the major part of her life, sbe was an invalid and confined to her bed.


Funeral services were held at her late home on Sunday after- noon, with Rev. John A. Christen- sen of the Presbyterian church, of- ficiating. Interment was in the family plot at Old Tennent ceme- tery, under the direction of Funeral Director J. Laird Hulse of English- town.

Mrs. Volanta Rebecca Clayton, aged 70 years, wife of Ulysses Clay- ton of Colts Neck, died suddenly on Tuesday evening while calling at the home of Disbrow Irons and fam- ily of near Toms River. Mr. Irons's brother is married to Mrs. Clayton's daughter. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of her daugh- ter, Mrs. Mabel B. Irons, Route 34, Colts Neck. Interment will be made In Riverview cemetery, Toms River, In charge of Funeral Director C. H. T. Clayton & Son of Adelphia.


Mrs. Clayton is survived by her husband, three daughters - Mrs. Rose Miller of Guilford Park, Mrs. Iona Cook of Red Bank, and Mrs. Irons of Colts Neck; one son, Wil- liam Clayton of Lakewood; one sis- ter, Mrs. Elizabeth Hendrickson, and a brother, Robert Lewis, both of Freehold.


She was born at Siloam, the daughter of the late Rebecca Par- ent and John Lewis. 5-4-39


Frank Cervelino


Frank Cervelino, 20, of 95 Ran- dolph street, died on Wednesday af- ternoon as the result of carbon mo- r.oxide poisoning. His body was found on the rear seat of his broth- er Michael's car, on the Robertsville road.


Death was listed a suicide. The young man was found by George Bromell, 1816 Mechanic street. who was on his way home. Investiga- tion by the state police from the Howell township station showed that the young man had attached la hose to the exhaust pipe of the car and had run it through a rear window.


Additional investigation disclosed that he had attempted to enlist in the Navy but had been rejected.


The body was removed to the William H. Freeman funeral home in the Potter and Son ambulance upon the order of Dr. Harvey W. Hartman. county physician.


Survivors besides the brother mentioned include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Cervelino; threc other brothers, Larry, Tony and 5- 7 - 42


Mrs. Clara Farry Cook


Mrs. Clara Fairy Cook, aged 75 years, widow of Perrine Cook, died on Saturday at her home at Farm- ingdale. Funeral services were held at her late home on Wednesday af- ternoon, conducted by Rev. H. P. Folger, pastor of the Farmingdale M. E. church, of which she was a member. Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery, Farmingdale, in charge of Funeral Director C. H. T. Clayton & Son of Adelphia.


She is survived by the following sons and daughters: Ira B. Cook, Manasquan; Mrs. Jennie C. Ketch- am, Freehold, R. F. D. 2; Howard F. and Harry L. Cook, Florida; Mrs. Hazel C. Ketcham, West Farms; Mrs. Clara E. Springer, West Freehold; P. Ruc Cook, Floyd K. Cook, and Ralph C. Cook, of Farmingdale; and Mrs. Frances C. VanDerveer of West Freehold; two brothers, George E. Farry of Farm- ingdale, and Sylvester Farry of Long Branch; and a sister, Mrs. Addison Hutchinson of Bradley Beach; and 18 grandchildren. She was the daughter of the late Wil- liam and Rebecca Hall Farry.

Charles Cook, 38, and his son, Howard, were burned to death at their home in Howell. Mrs. Cook and two other children managed to escape from the burning house. Howard went into the kitchen to light a lantern which exploded and set fire to his clothing and the house. The father, who went to rescue his son, was also enveloped in flames. Mrs. Cook, who manag- ed to get her other children out of the house, returned to the second floor to get some valuables and was trapped and had to jump from the window. 1-1-1942

Mrs. Lillie M. Cook, aged 73 years. died on Thursday morning at her home near Cassville. Funeral ser- vices were held on Sunday after- noon at ber late home, and at the Pleasant Grove M. E. Church. She was the widow of George Mc- Clelland Cook, and was born in VanHiseville, the daughter of Reub- en Camp and Martha Crawford Camp. She is survived by one daughter, and one son, Mrs. Harry Jones, and Stanley Cook, both of VanHiseville; one sister, Mrs. Eliza- beth Caffrey. Hatboro, Pa .; and five brothers, William Camp, Cassville; Walter, Germantown, Pa .; Oliver, Herbertsville; Amos. Lakewood, and George M. Camp of VanHiseville.


Mrs. Hannah W. Charles


Mis. Hannah W. Charles, aged 45 years, wife of William Charles, for- mer residents of Hightstown, died


on Saturday at the State Hospital at Marlboro. The hody was re- moved to the VanSant Colonial Home on South Street here, and after being prepared for burial, was sent to Philadelphia. Funeral ser- vices were held in that city on Tuesday afternoon, followed by in- terment in Worthwood Cemetery. there. 1-12-39

The Methodist Church on Sun- day afternoon at 4 o'clock, was the scene of a pretty early Fall wed- ding when Miss Jean Hulda Bark- alow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Barkalow of 24 Lincoln Piace, was united in marriage to Horace Andrew Conover, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grandin Conover of 48 Manalapan avenue. The Rev. Fruce Duvall performed the cere- mony. Mrs. Duvall was at the or- gan and played the wedding music.


Disbrow - Conner


The wedding of Miss Ruth Helyn Disbrow, daughter of Mrs. Ray- mond Farry, Farmingdale, to Wil- liam Noble Conner, son of Mr. and Mrs. William W. Conner, Lakewood, took place on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the First Methodist church of Lakewood, with the Rev.
