"DEAR SIR : After examining, with much care, the circulars and papers which you kindly sent me weeks since, I am convinced of the justness of the criticisms which you make upon the old methods of nsurance. I have concluded, therefore, to drop a policy which I hold in one of the oldest companies, o take in its stead a larger policy in the PROVIDENT SAVINGS LIFE ASSURANCE SOCIETY. Enclosed ill please find the application duly filled out. I am confident that the important reforms which you are Incing into life insurance will secure to you a large patronage from the insuring public. " Yours truly, G. F. COMFORT."

PREFACE.

, The Albany Directory having first made its appearance in the year 1813, we cannot therefore now claim the publication to be a century old ; but as the present year is "The Centennial " one of our National Independence, we see no reason why we may not, as others do for other things, call this number "The Centennial" issue, and thus give to it by this extra title, that wonderful perfectness which these words of late are made to imply.

That this "Centennial " issue, for accuracy and completeness, is far superior to either of its predecessors, and justly entitled to all the praise that any one thing is, over another of its class, there is in our minds not the least doubt. In the multitude of names and figures, however, which almost exclusively go to make up a work of this kind, we should have accom- plished a miracle, had we completed the work without making any errors or omissions. It is, therefore, not only possible, but quite probable that some of both may occur; although we confidently believe these will not be found, either many or important.

To the public generally who have aided our canvassers in collecting the names and other material for the work, we return acknowledgments, and to our numerous Friends and Patrons who have so generously favored us with their more substantial aid, we hereby return our most cordial thanks. Hoping that at no distant day, very many more of our business men who so frequently have occasion to consult the pages of the Directory, thereby reaping its benefits, and who annually decline to become one of our patrons, may be made (voluntarily or otherwise) to more fully realize the great obligation which they are under to both Our Patrons and Ourselves.
