Average Expenses to Income, excluding Taxes in 1872 . 8.57 per cent.

The results of its business show that of the entire receipts the Company retain 42.22 per cent. as an insurance fund and surplus ; that 47.67 per cent. has been returned to members or their families for losses, return premiums and surrendered Policies ; and that only 10.11 per cent. has been expended for all other purposes.

These results are more favorable to the insured than those presented by any other country in the world.

We can speak of the WATERS Pi inos from personal knowledge as being of the very best quality .- Christian Intelligencer.

We have one of MR. WATERS Pianofortes in, our residence. (where it has stood for years) of which any manufacturer in the world might well be proud. We have always been delighted with it as a sweet-toned and powerful instrument, and there is no doubt of fte durability ; more than this, some of the best amateur players in the city, as well as several celebrated pianists, have performed on said piano, and all pronounce it a superior and FIRAT-CLASS INSTRUMENT. Stronger endorsement we could not give .- Home Journal.

Sir :- The organ was duly received. and we return to you the thanks of the Teachers' Association, for your generous donation of seventy-five dollars on the instrument. The organ is all that we expected it to be, and gives entire satisfaction to all.

. CHAS. R. DOUGLAS, Washington. D. C. .

We are very well pleased with the Organ, which is pronounced a good instrument by those who profess to know. Mr. S. WITT, Fort Littleton, Pa .. So far the WATERS Organs give No. 1 satisfaction-the Mason & Hamlin notwith: standing.

C. F. ECKHART, Dacotah City, Neb.

The Organ you sent is highly appreciated by the freedmen here. It is in the Second Baptist Church, and used at nearly every service. We think the tone is very sweet, and the action remarkably easy. Thanking von for the liberal donation, we remain, yours, rep .ctfully. H. M. TUPPER, Prin., H. M. SAGE, Assistant, Raleigh, N. C. - To say that we were well pleased with the Organ would be but a faint expression of our gratification. Several of our neighbors have called to see it, and pronounce it "splendid." Please accept my thanks for your kind favor, &c.

PREFACE.

We herewith present to the public the Ninth Edition of the Long Island Directory, including a Business Directory of the City of Brooklyn, the second city in the Empire State. We have sought each year to en- large our sphere of observation, and thus attain greater certainty in the collection of materials, and its compila- tion under the appropriate heads. In this edition we have endeavored to excel all our previous efforts. As a work of reference, we are satisfied our patrons will find it to be very useful and entirely reliable. In the collec- tion of information we have required our agents to verify their statements, and in no instance to rely upon mere suppositions or hearsay in making out their reports. . They have visited every house, and taken down all answers given them by those whose names we have in- serted. An experience of fifteen years should enable the publisher to compile a work of commendable utility, which, it is believed, a discerning public will, as hereto- fore, duly appreciate, and continue to extend to him their liberal patronage. We are thankful to those gen- · tlemen who have kindly aided us in our work, and hope they may realize all the benefits, in making use of the Directory, that their services so justly deserve.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1873, by D. Ourtin, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, Washington, D. C.
