PREFACE TO THE SEVENTY-EIGHTH VOLUME. 1864-5.
THE publisher of the Directory is compelled, for the first, since this important work came into his hands, to offer a word of apology for its non-appearance at the usual time. Its publication, however, has been delayed but a week, and it is the cause of the delay, rather than the delay itself, which is the main reason for regret.
The same exertions, the same degree of ability, and a greater degree of perfection in the organization of the machinery necessary for the collection of the information essential to the value of the Directory have been employed, and at a much greater expense, than in any previous year; but we are now entering upon the fourth year of the rebel war, and the great demands of the nation for men have rendered laborers of all kinds, and especially of the more intelli- gent and active kind, such as must be employed in this work, so scarce, that it has been with extreme difficulty a sufficient number could be obtained to enable the work to be brought out even with so brief a delay. The publication of the Directory is in many ways a sure indication of the condition of the country, as well as of the pros- perity and growth of its commercial metropolis. It was stated last year that in only one year since its publication had the number of names in the Directory indicated a decrease in the population and the business of the city, and that was in the year succeeding the great commercial disasters of 1857. Both the first and the second years of the rebel war, notwithstanding the immense number of men which the Empire City furnished to the armies and navy of the Union, showed an increase of population ; the last year perhaps the least; but the condition of the city as shown by the number of

names in the Directory this year is decidedly an improvement on the last. The same classes have been canvassed as before, and the same thoroughness followed in collecting names, and the increase exhibited is about a thousand names, which indicate an increase of population of about five times that number .* But this can hardly be taken as a fair indication of the actual increase in the business of the city ; for the great rise in rent and the scarcity of houses have greatly increased the hotel and boarding-house population, of which no ac- count is taken, and driven a large number of families over to Brooklyn, Jersey City, and the villages and country in the neigh- borhood of which New York is the centre.
In past editions of the Directory the publisher has felt himself under the necessity of noticing the obstacles which have been placed in the way of canvassers in the collection of names by ill-tempered or ill-disposed persons who did not, or would not understand the importance of a direct and truthful answer to the questions put in relation to their places of residence and business; and he is now very happy to say that such annoyances and hindrances to the completion of the work are so rare as not to require notice. The public have come to rightly understand that it is for the inter- est and convenience of every honest member of the community that his place of residence and business should be known.
The great increase in the prices of labor and of all the material which must be used in the compilation, printing and manufacture of a work like this, must of necessity involve either a disastrous loss to the publisher, or an increase in the price at which it is sold. No choice has been left but either to diminish the value of the Directory by greatly curtailing the amount and accuracy of the information which the public have been accustomed to look for in its pages, or to increase its price. Believing that the latter would be most in conformity with the public wishes, it has been adopted ; but still the increase of price will not be proportioned to the increase in the cost of paper, and other materials, or to the expansion of value, which has taken place in all other kinds of productions of labor.
* The total number of names contained in this volume is 152,559.
