Mustered out, June 2, 1863. In '66 he settled near Chesters Gap, Va., in the sheep grazing business. In '69 lie purchased the "Adrian Weekly Journal," since which time he has been engaged in journalism, having occupied the following positions : In '70 was cditor of the Detroit " Daily Union." Subsequently published the "Lapeer Democrat" and "Pontiac Journal." From '70 to '85 was connected with the daily press of Detroit. In '85 he represented the "Detroit Free Press" at Washington. From '85 to '89 was Librarian of the Patent Office. In February. 1896, joined the Editorial Staff of the "Philadelphia Press, which position he now occupies
ERWIN A. BOWEN, DIED IN MEDINA, N. Y., JANUARY 22, 1889.
Born in 1835. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, as Captain Co. D. Captured at Cedar Mountain, Va., August 9, 1862. Confined at Libby Prison. Paroled at Aikens Landing, Va., September 13, 1862. Mustcred out, October 31, 1862, for promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel in the 15ist New York. Subsequent to his service in the army he resided at Medina, N. Y., engaged in manufacturing.
Captain Bowen was one of the best disciplinarians in the Twenty-eighth Regiment, and as a drill-master had few superiors in the army. He was a model soldier, a steadfast friend, a perfect gentleman. Uniformly cour- teous, he was beloved by all who knew him. No name is recalled in the long list of the Twenty-eighth Regiment with feelings of greater respect and admiration than Cap- tain Bowell.

DAVID HARDIE,
DIED MARCH 28, 1896, AT ALBION, N. Y.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, September 16, 1821. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, Captain Co. G. Resigned . June 1, 1862.
In 1839 he entered the British army as a gunner in the Royal Artillery. He served in England and Ireland, and in 1846 was sent to Canada and stationed at Quebee. He soon after left the army and was employed in news- paper work in London and Hamilton. In 1856 he moved to Albion and engaged in the newspaper and book trade. When the civil war broke out he raised a company in Orleans county, which became Co. G of the 28th Regi- ment.
After his return from the army he resumed the book and newspaper business and continued it until his death.
JEREMIAH LONG, DIED APRIL 3, 1896.

Born at Lockport, N. Y., September 29, 1836. Enlisted at Loekport in April, 1861. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, as Ist Sergeant in Co. A. Promoted 2d Lieutenant, Janu- ary 30, 1862, and ist Lieutenant, July 21, 1862. Was captured at Cedar Mountain, Va., August 9, 1862. Was confined at Belle Island. Paroled at Aikens Landing, September 24, 1862. Mustered out, June 2, 1863. Was Acting Captain, commanding Co. A, when mustered out.
Mr. Long went to California soon after the war and was for a time conductor on the Southern Pacific Rail- road.
Later he engaged in mining in California for several years. After which he occupied a position in the Sol- diers' Home at Santa Monica, Cal. He died at Los An- geles, Cal., April 3. 1896, and was buried at Lockport, N. Y., April 11, 1896.
CAPTAIN W. W. BUSH, DIED APRIL 19, 1886.
Born in 1832. Mustered in. May 22, 1861, as Captain of Co. B. Detached on transportation service, via Chesa- peake & Ohio Canal, in February, 1862. Captured at Cedar Mountain, Va., August 9, 1862, and confined at Staunton. Va. Taken to Richmond, Va., August 28, 1862. Paroled at Aikens Landing, Va., September 24, 1862. Mustered out, June 2, 1863.
Capt. Bush enjoyed the distinction of having been the " First Volunteer" for the War under President Lin- eoln's call for 75,000 troops.
He resided at Lockport, N. Y., subsequent to the War. Was prominent in G. A. R. circles, and was elected President of the 12th Army Corps and Vice President of the Society of the Army of the l'otomac in 1883.

Born in Cuba, Alleghany Co., N. Y., August 6, 1841. Enlisted September 1, 1861, as musician in regimental band. Musicred out. September 7, 1862, at Rockville, Md., per Act of July 8, 1862.
Is a member of S. T. Bartle Post, No. 183, Depart- ment N. Y., G. A. R., is an earnest worker in same, hav- ing held the office of Post Commander, and many times delegate to State Encampment. Now holding office of Secretary in the Alleghany County Association, G. A. R. In 1865 became a prominent contractor and builder. and is still engaged in that business in connection with owning and running a planing mill and lumber yard. Is an active volunteer fireman and life member of the New York State Fireman's Association.

STEPHEN P. LAPHAM, HOANELLSVILLE, N. Y.
Born at Macedon, N. Y., January 19. 1839. Mustered in, September 1, 186r, as ist Class Musician in band. Discharged, September 29, 1862, near Rockville, Md., per act of July 8, 1862.
Was engaged in the profession of music in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, until 1885. Was then elected to the chair of Music in Agricultural College, Brookings, Dakota. Held that position until 1892.
At present is located in Hornellsville, N. Y., still engaged in musical work.
CYRUS E. LE SUER, BOLIVAR, N. Y.
Born at Bolivar, N. Y., December 16, 1830. Mustered in, September 1, 1861, as member of regimental band. Mustered out, August 16, 1862. Re-enlisted September 19. 1864, as leader of brigade band, First Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22d Army Corps. Mustered out, June 27, 1865. Mr. LeSuer is engaged in farming, at his home in Bolivar, where he has always resided.

ENOS B. WHITMORE, ROCHESTER, N. Y.
Born at Lockport, N. Y., March 8, 1837. Enlisted October 21, 1861. Musician in regimental band. Mus- tered out August 16, 1862, at Washington, D. C., per Act of July 8. 1862.
For many years he was a surveyor and engineer. In 1880 he assisted in projecting a railroad from Rochester to Lake Ontario ; thence to Braddock's Bay. Later he started a Patent Soliciting Business, in which he is at present engaged. He is given to study, and has published several works on Astronomy, in which subject he is much interested.
WILLIAM H. CHAMBERS, 163 TREMONT STREET, BOSTON, MASS.
Born at Troy, N. Y., 1843. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, as Private Co. A. Transferred to regimental band, from October 12, 1861, to August 17, 1802. Mustered out, June 2, 1863.
After the war traveled as musician with several min- strel organizations until 1870, when he located in Boston, Mass., which has been his home since that time. Mr. Chambers is engaged in musical work. As a cornetist, he ranks among the very best in the country.

BENJAMIN FLAGLER, NIAGARA FALLS, N. Y.
Born in Lockport. N. Y., December 10, 1833. Mus- tered in, October 21, 1861. as Captain of Co. A. Resigned, on account of disability, October 21, 1862.
He was one of four brothers who served in the War. ' Mr. Flagler was appointed Inspector of Customs in the District of Niagara in 1803, and later Collector of Cus- toms, which office he held until June 1, 1886. He has been a prominent citizen of Niagara Falls, and an active mcinber of the Masonic fraternity ; also a member of the G. A. R., and Commander of Dudley-Donnelly Post.
January 1, 1895. he was appointed Chief of Ordnance on the staff of Governor Morton. with the rank of Briga- dier-General, and is also Acting Quartermaster-General and Acting Cominissary-General of New York State.
General Flagler is one of the most faithful at the yearly reunions, having never missed one since the organization.
DANIEL R. WHITCHER, LOCKPORT, N. Y.
Born in Lockport, N. Y., December 7, 1830. Enlisted in the United States Army March 4, 18;4. Joined the 9th Regiment, December, 1856, ordered to Oregon Terri- tory. Promoted Quartermaster-Sergeant, and was present at the massacre of the Cascades under Philip H. Sheridan. Was honorably discharged at Fort Walla Walla, Oregon, March 4, 1859.
Enlisted, April 19. 1861. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, as ist Lieutenant Co. A. Resigned, February 14, 1862, at Washington, D. C.
Re-enlisted in Battery B, ist Michigan Light Ar- tillery, September 14. 1863. Promoted Sergeant, Novem- ber, 1863, and detailed to Ordnance Department until mustered out, July 12, 1865.
Was appointed Brevet-Captain Co. C, ad Michigan Infantry. Wounded at the Battle of Bentonsville.
WILLIAM H. CRAMPTON, LOCKPORT, N. Y.
Born in Orleans County, N. Y., December 17, 1840. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, Private Co. A. Promoted Corporal, March, 1862. Wounded in action at Cedar Mountain, Va., August 9, 1862. Right arm amputated. Discharged for disability from wounds, at General Hos- pital. Alexandria, Va., September 24, 1862.
He has always been an active temperance worker, has repeatedly represented temperance organizations in State and National Conventions. Last year he repre- sented the Supreme Council as a Fraternal Delegate to the National Convention of the W. C. T. U. which inet at Denver, Colorado, and was also one of the representa- tives to the World's Temperance Congress at Chicago.
Hc has for many years been successfully engaged in organizing and instituting councils of the Royal
Templus of Temperance.'

Was with the regiment in every battle and on every march of its history. For more than twenty years has been largely and successfully engaged in the cooperage and cooperage stock business and is one of the most prominent and influential citizens in Lockport, N. Y., where he has always resided.

Is a direct descendant of Hugh Maxwell, of Revolu- tionary fame, and his father, Dr. Henry Maxwell, was a surgeon of the war of 1812. Was appointed Deputy United States Marshal, at Suspension Bridge, after the war. His profession is the stage; and he devotes his leisure to his vineyard and poultry farm, at Royal Oak, near Detroit, Mich.

Mr. Colton was never absent from the regiment, par- ticipating in every inarch and battle in which it was engaged.
After his term of service expired, he returned to Niagara County, N. Y., where he was engaged in farming for a number of years - but his health failing, he was obliged to leave the farm, and moved to Pendleton Center, where he died, March 12. 1895 He was a mem- ber of C. P. Sprout Post, No. 76, G. A. R., in Lockport, N. Y,

Born at Akron, N. Y., May 6, 1838. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, as 2d Lieutenant in Co. C. Detailed on Signal service, August 25, 1861. Promoted Ist Lieutenant, March 19, 1862.
Lieutenant Wicker was appointed Ist Lieutenant in the Signal Corps, U. S. A., June 13, 1863, and served in the Army of the Potomac and Department of the Gulf until honorably discharged, August 22, 1865.
He served two years as agent for the Russian and American Telegraph expedition in Siberia. In 1869 he was appointed special agent of the Treasury department in Alaska. In 1873 he was appointed by President U. S. Grant Collector of Customs at Key West, Fla., and was also in the Customs service 1889 to 1894, since which time he has been connected with the Mutual Life Insurance Co., at New Orleans, La.

Is a member of Charles P. Sprout Post, No. 76, G. A. R., and the First Congregational Church, and devotes much of his spare time to temperance and pro- hibition work.

Born in Broomfield, Ontario County N. Y., May 2 1828. Mustored in, May 22, 1861, as private in Co. C, having materially assisted in organizing the Company. · Promoted Corporal, March 19, 1862. Discharged for dis- ability at Sandy Hook, Md , December 3, 1862.
Re-enlisted in 33d N. Y. Independent Battery, Light Artillery, July, 1863. Mustered out, June 1865. Sub- sequently was appointed Brevet-Lieutenant, by Governor Fenton, "for gallant and meritorious services in the late war.'
Mr. Collins was among the Sioux, Crow, Creeks and Lower Brule Indians in South Dakota, in the employ- ment of the government, in 1891.
His occupation is farmer. He has resided on his farm at Pekin since the war.

WILLIAM SIMS, CLARKS, NEB.
Born in the County of Hampshire, England, April 10, 1831. Mustered in as Private in Co. C, May 22, 1861. Promoted Corporal June 30, 1862. Mustered out, June 2, 1863.
Re-enlisted in Wheeler's Independent 33d N. Y. Light Battery. Served in the roth and 18th Corps in the cam- paign about Petersburg, Richmond and the James River. Was promoted Corporal and Sergeant in June, 1864. Was finally mustered out at Petersburg, Va., in July, 1865. The above is Comrade Sims the " FARMER." We
have also the pleasure of seeing him as a " Sol.DIER."

WILLIAM SIMS, 1862.
The following is from a recent letter from comrade Sims :
I will send you my picture that was taken in a snow storm at Woodstock, Va., March, 1862, east of the Shen- andoah River, whilst in camp waiting for the bridge to be repaired, when we were after Stonewall Jackson, after Shields' fight at Winchester. I was 30 years old at the time it was taken. My hair was black as a raven, but now as white as wool. Was straight, but now bent over. I am 65 years old tothe day of next April.

Left as nurse to the . wounded from Cedar Mountain, and captured at Cul- peper, Va., August 19, 1802. Paroled October 6, 1862, at Aikens Landing, Va. Mustered out, June 2, 1863.
Comrade Welsher's home is at Hartland, Niagara County, N. Y., and his occupation a farmer.
JOHN F. BRAUER, ST. JOHNSBURG, N. Y.
Born in Prussia, Germany, December 17, 1840. En- listed at Lockport, N. Y., April 29, 186r. Mustered in, May 22, 1861, private, Co. C. Mustered out, June 2, 1863. Mr. Brauer came to this country with his parents in 1847, and at the first call for soldiers, after the attack on Fort Sumter, he volunteered and served his full time of enlistment.
