CAUTION!
DIRECTORY SWINDLERS.
Before you sign any order for Directories, see that it bears the name of Sampson, Murdock & Co., or some well-known publishing house.
Don't sign, if requested, a "cash voucher," or any other voucher. If you do, these frauds will have your signature for another Directory.
Considerable money has been collected in this city during the past three years on forged or raised advertising contracts, and on books that have no circulation whatever beyond those shown by the swindlers.
If any order is presented you for collection for insertion of name in a "mercantile " or other Directory that you are not well acquainted with, delay payment until you can investigate. If in doubt, notify us, or call a detective.
Keep a record of all advertising contracts given, with the name and address of the publishers, and upon payment, insist upon the return of the original contract. Do not accept a receipt instead, and leave the contract in their hands to enable them to change the date and, later, collect a second and third time for the same thing.
Business men can put a stop to this species of swindling by refusing to have anything to do with "Directories," "Registers " or "Indexes " with which they are not entirely familiar, and which they do not see in common use. But as long as they will continue to pay for insertion of their names in unknown publications with a nice sounding title, because "it is only a small amount," these frauds will continue to visit them.
