OFFICE OF THE DIAPHRAGM FILTER 349 BROADWAY, cor. Leonard Street, N. Y.
PURIFICATION OF WATER.
THE
DIAPHRA M
FILTER.
THIS popular invention is designed to purify all river, hydrant, or cistern water, and will filter almost as fast as the fluid usually flows from the spout or faucet,-fast enough for cooking, and the washing of clothes. Bread, starch, linen, and various articles are much whitened by the use of filtered water; and thousands are improving the luxury of their Croton Bath, by removing the slimy, fishy, and vegetable matter from the water, by the use of the Diaphragm Filter, which has become established as a standard article of domestic use in all the principal Cities of the Union.
To be had in Philadelphia, at 209 Chesnut Street, opposite Jones' Hotel ;- in Baltimore, at 3 South Street ;-- in Boston, at 451 Wash- ington Street. (Orer.

SHIPS' USE.
Naval Officers, Ship Captains, and Officers of the Marine in general, can appreciate the importance of Pure Water, and readily understand the following remarks:
The water from the Croton and Long Pond, and indeed all river water, when long kept in wooden casks, undergoes a kind of putrefaction, con- tracts a disagreeable sulphurous smell, and becomes unfit to drink. The influence of the external air is by no means necessary to this change, for it happens in close vessels even more readily than when freely exposed to the atmospherical oxygen. The origin of this impurity lies in the great amount of animal and vegetable matter suspended in it, which, when collected from the Croton and Long Pond waters, as has been ascertained by experiment, consists of one gallon of impurity in every one hundred of the clearest water. This impurity, however minutely divided, with a sufficient warmth occasions fermentation, and causes the liberation of offensive gases. As all water becomes unfit for use merely in consequence of the admixture of these foreign matters, for water in itself is not liable to decomposition, it may be purified by the removal. All that need be done to secure pure water for the longest voyage, is to pass it through the Dia- phragm Filter at the time of placing it on board. This Filter removes from the water all the impurities nearly as fast as it flows from the hydrant. They are portable, cheap and durable, and whenever this fact is known, no water would be carried to sea without first being cleansed. The Officers of the Navy, Masters and Owners of Vessels, are invited to witness the invention in operation at No. 349 Broadway, N. Y.
