GREAT NATIONAL ENGRAVING
OF THE
U. S. SENATE CHAMBER, PUBLISHED BY E. ANTHONY-ENGRAVED BY T. DONEY.
This great engraving. the fruit of four years' labor and got up at an expense of many thousand dollars, is for sale at the office of the publisher and by his agents.
The reputation it has anained from the highest sources in this country has been endorsed by the lovers of art in all parts of the Old World, and it stands, beyond a cavil, among the proudest monun ents of the Fine Arts.
The number of likenesses, of the most distinguished men of our country, contained in the engraving is about one hundred, and the fidelity with which the artist has succeeded in represenung them is regarded as unsurpassed in the annals of art.
TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN ART.
The Publisher of the Engraving of the United States Senate Chamber has received from the Emperor of Anstria a magnificent gold medal of the weight of three ounces, most beautifully executed, bearing on one side the likeness of Ferdinand, I., the reigning Emperor, and on the reverse a beautiful wreath of oak and laure leaves, surrounding the motto " Recta Tueri."
Accompanying the medal was the following dispatch :
"WASHINGTON CITY, January 20, 1848.
" To Mr E. Anthony, late Anthony, Clark & Co .- Sir :- The gold medal which will be delivered to you by Mr. Auguste Belnont, Ans- trian Consul General in New York, was sent to me by Prince Metternich. for the purpose of being presented to you as an acknowledgment for an Engraving of the United States Senate Chamber, transmitted some time ago by you to His Majesty the Emperor of Austria, and which interesting and valuable work of American Art has been much adimired in my own country. I have much pleasure in transmitting to you this flattering testimonial of the success of your enterprise in Europe.
