Beebee Island Agricultural

Journal and Republican .- This Works .- G. LORD, Proprietor, Water- | excellent local newspaper, published every Wednesday at Lowville, has deservedly been a farerito with the citizens of Lewis Co. for numy years. Hon. A. V. Smiley, the accomplished editor, has won for it many friends and a great addition to its circulation. Advertisers will do well to make a note of the number they issue at present. The Job department of this office is well stocked with modern type, fast pressez, and munned by competent printers. We are not alone in wishing the Journal and Republican long life and a prosperous business career. See advertisement on page 240.

town, N. Y .- This establishment, one of the oldest in Northern New York, deserves more than a passing notice. The business was commenced about thirty years ago as a plow mannfactory, under the control and management of Edmund Davis, who afterward disposed of his works to J. Lord, his competitor in the business. It has since passed through the hands of four different firms, each doing a successful business and very materially adding to the list of articles manufactured, the reputa- tion of which, throughout Jefferson and adjoining counties is too well known to need comment. The present works, erect- ed sixteen years since, and situated on the southerly portion of Beebee's Island, and near the Woodruff Honse aud Denot of the Rome, Watertown and Ordensburgh Rail- road, consist of two extensive brick build- ings, covered with slate, and so arranged internally that water power derived from the maminoth flume, (the best in the State,) is made to do all the work and handling of materials and implements with astonish- ing ease, and is in all other respects a model agricultural works. It is at these works the celebrated State Premium Steel Plow, the Young America Mower, and Lord's Corrugated Wood-burner Furnaces, that have been so extensively uscd, are made.

We are informed by the present proprie- tor, who is a son of the builder of the first bull plow ever used in the county, that he is in receipt of more orders for his manufac- tures than the present capacity of the works will admit of turning out, and he contem- plates soon making additions sufficient to meet the increasing demand for his produc- tions. The great success of this establish- ment is owing in no inconsiderable degree to the fact that none but the best of work- men are employed, each one of whom is master of his particular branch. The ina- terials used in the manufacture of machines are all carefully selected, and, finally, Mr. Lord, who is himself a thorough mechanic of long experience, gives his personal at- tention to the supervision of his business, and under his excellent management the " Beebee Island Agricultural Works " must continue as they have ever been, the lead- ing establishment of the kind in Northern New York. Seeadvertisements on colored pages 213, 231, 365, 283 and inside first cover.

fra Austin, Harness Maker and donler in Trunks, Robes, Horse Clothing &e., No. 87 State Street, Lowville, N. Y., pub- hehes an illustrated advertisement on page 6. Mr. Austin hay had extensive experi- ence in his business, employs the best of workmen and materials, and turns out first class goods, a fact which any of our readers may verify by calling at his largo and well filled store. Hi- stock of goods is always full, and he is prepared to supply other harness makers in the County with sneh goods as they may need. Don't for- get to call ou him when in want of goods in his line.

The Buckeye Mowing and Neaping Machines -- When the great U. S. Trial of Mowers and Reapers was held at Syracuse in 1857, this admirable machine, which had just been brought out, surprised everybody by its novelty and many excellencies, and won the highest uwards. At that time the valiable patents under which it was built were sscured for several States by the enterprising firm which now continues its manufacture, ADRIANCE, PLATT & Co. At the second great trial of Mowers and Reapers. made by the New York State Agricultural Society in 1806, the Buckeye again carried off the highest honors, showing that in the years intervening it had not gone backward in the race for superiority. Every now suy- gestion is thoroughly weighed, improve- ments only are adopted. The verdict of the people is nearly as unanimous as that of the learned and practical committees who mnade these awards, for its sales far exceed those of any other machine in the sections supplied by ADRIANCE, PLATT & Co. In fact they increase so fast, that the demand is almost always in excess of the supply. The Self-Raking Attachment on the Buckeye Machine has met with a snc- cess corresponding to that of the Mower, and has surpassed all others in the per- fection of its operation. One great secret of the success of ADRIANCE, PLATT & CO., as manufacturers, has been in the con- scientious manner in which they have built their machines, and the great durability of the Buckeye Machine has been largely due to the excellence of the material used and the mechanical perfection of the workman- ship. See advertisement on Map.

G. W. Fowler, general dealer in Hardware, Cutlery, Stoves, Agricultural Implements &c., at Lowville, N. Y., oc- cnpies a store 85 feet deep, with a rear addition of about 20 feet moro. Ilo keeps a full line of goods and buys with such good judgment that he is enabled to supply the wants of his customers at fair prices ; so that it is not a necessity that they make a journey out of the County for this class of goods. Mr. Fowler has been located here many years, and has gained many friends among his customers ; but he is just as willing to gain now friends and new customera as he is to retain the old. Call and see him when you visit Lowville. See card on page 306.

Their store 15 115 feet in depth, and they occupy the four floors of the building. The manner in which they have held and increased their trade, through all the changes of the times, and against all the competition, is the best proof of the osteem in which they are held by their numerous patrons.
