NEW YORK IN SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.
RÉSUMÉ.
According to the report of the commanding officer of the naval militia of this state, Captain JJacob W. Miller, this organization furnished volunteers to the United States navy, to serve one year, 800 enlisted men.
The number of officers furnished by this state, as per records received from the United States navy department, was 209, including officers of the naval militia.
The total known number of officers and enlisted men furnished by this state to the United States navy during the Spanish- American war is therefore 1,009.
However, this does not include the men who enlisted from this state into the United States navy directly, not by way of the state naval militia, whose number it has been impracticable to obtain.
It will be noticed, by Captain Miller's report, that the number of naval militia officers of this state who entered the United States service was about fifty-one, or about one-fourth of the total num- ber of volunteer officers in the United States navy from this state, and it is deemed fair to apply this proportion to those, not of the naval militia, who enlisted as volunteers in the navy directly, which would make their number 3,200, and the total number of volunteers, officers and enlisted men furnished by this state to the United States navy would be 4,200.
1
İ
GENERAL RÉSUMÉ OF VOLUNTEERS.
As shown, the number of officers and enlisted men furnish d by the state of New York to the United States for the Spanish- American war, was:
New York volunteers, army 20,870
Navy and naval militia (navy estimated) 4,200
Total
25,070
Add to this
118
United States volunteer officers from this state .. Men of this state who enlisted in the U. S. volun- teer signal corps; U. S. volunteer hospital corps; U. S. volunteer engineers; U. S. volunteer cav- alry, artillery and infantry, whose numbers can be estimated only 2,000
Men who enlisted in the regular army from this state for two years, estimated, and probably inside actual figures 3,000
Or in round numbers a total of at least. 30,000 men.
The total number of deaths in the service, of men credited to this state, is recorded as 13 officers and 429 enlisted men. Of this number, 11 officers and 425 enlisted men are credited to the New York volunteers; 1 officer and 4 enlisted men to the navy volunteer officers and the naval militia, and one officer to the United States volunteers.
The number of officers in the New York volunteers was SS6. and the number of enlisted men, 19,984; total, 20,870; the number of deaths in proportion to the number was:
(11) officers (S86) == 1.24%.
(425) enlisted men (19,984) == 2.12 7%, or
(436) of the total of officers and enlisted men (20,870) = 2.00%.
The average length of term of actual service of the New York volunteer organizations was about 7 2-5.
