SECOND REGIMENT, INFANTRY.


In accordance with paragraph I, general orders, No. 8, general headquarters, state of New York, dated adjutant-general's office, Albany, April 27, 1898, the commanding officer of the third brigade, national guard, Brigadier-General Robert Shaw Oliver, organized two regiments from organizations of his brigade, form- ing one of these two regiments of the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth battalions of his brigade and designating it the " second regiment, national guard, composed of organizations of the third brigade." The regiment thus organized consisted of the sixth, seventh, twelfth and twenty-first separate companies, constitut- ing the thirteenth battalion; of the ninth, eighteenth, twenty- second and thirty-second separate companies, constituting the fourteenth battalion, and of the thirty-first, thirty-sixth, thirty- seventh and forty-sixth separate companies, constituting the fifteenth battalion.


The prior histories of these organizations follow:


SIXTH SEPARATE COMPANY.


(Third Brigade.)


State Armory, corner River and Ferry streets, Troy.


The Troy Citizens' Corps was organized, September 23, 1835, and chartered by act of legislature, May 20, 1836. On the break- ing out of the war of the rebellion the members of the company practically all joined the United States forces and the company was compelled to suspend all action as an organization. February 3, 1877, the company was re-organized, and February 20, 1877, was mustered into the state service as the sixth separate company, tenth brigade. Its designation was changed to the twentieth separate company, December S, 1877, and to sixth separate com- pany, February 4, 187S. Under the orders of the Governor of the state, the company aided the civil authorities in December, 1839, in quelling resistance by the anti-renters; again, in 1844, under the order of the mayor of Troy; in 1850 it assisted in suppressing a riot in the northern part of the city of Troy, and in July, 1877,

during the railroad riots, it performed duty at West Albany. It was on duty at Buffalo during the switchmen's strike in August, 1892.


SEVENTH SEPARATE COMPANY. (Third Brigade.) State Armory, Main and Hart streets, Cohoes.


Organized, February 26, 1876, as the third separate company of the tenth brigade, third division. Its designation was changed to seventh separate company, December 8, 1877. It performed duty during the railroad riots in 1877, and at Buffalo during the switchmen's strike in August, 1892.


NINTH SEPARATE COMPANY. (Third Brigade.) Armory, Whitchall.


Organized as second separate company, tenth brigade, April 26, . 1876, and designation changed to ninth separate company, Decem- ber 8, 1877. On duty during railroad riots in July, 1877.


TWELFTH SEPARATE COMPANY. (Third Brigade.)


State Armory, corner River and Ferry streets, Troy.


Organized, March 20, 1876, as the fourth separate company, tenth brigade, and designation changed to twelfth separate com- pany, December S, 1877. . On duty at West Albany during the railroad riots in July, 1877.


EIGHTEENTH SEPARATE COMPANY.


(Third Brigade.) State Armory, 85-89 Warren street, Glens Falls.


Organized as the fifth separate company, tenth brigade, in November, 1876, and designation changed to eighteenth separate company, December S, 1877. On duty in the state service at Troy during the railroad riots in July, 1877.

FORTY-SIXTH SEPARATE COMPANY.

Organized, September 6. 18SS. On duty at Buffalo during the switchmen's strike in August, 1892.


Upon the recommendation of the brigade commander, General Oliver, the Governor appointed on April 29, 1898:


Captain Edward E. Hardin, seventh United States infantry, colonel, and


Major James H. Lloyd, thirteenth battalion, national guard, lieutenant-colonel of the regiment.


Pursuant to 'special orders, No. 70, dated adjutant-general's office, Albany, April 30, 1898, the organizations which composed this regiment left their home stations on May 2d, in time to take trains for Camp Black, at Hempstead Plains, Long Island, as follows:


The ninth separate company, at 5 a. m .; the eighteenth separate company, at 5:15 a. m .; the thirty-first separate company, at 5:45 a. m .; the seventh separate company, at 6:00 a. m .; the twenty- second separate company, at 6:20 a. m .; the thirty-second sepa- rate company, at 6:30 a. m .; the forty-sixth separate company, at 7:15 a. m .; the thirty-sixth and thirty-seventh separate companies. at 7:30 a. m., and the sixth, twelfth and twenty-first separate companies, at 8:00 a. m.


At Camp Black the component parts of the regiment received regimental designations as follows: The sixth separate company became company A; the seventh became company B; the twelfth became company C; the twenty-first became company D; the thirty-six became company E; the thirty-seventh became com- pany F; the thirty-first became company G; the forty-sixth became company H; the ninth became company I; the eighteenth became company K, the twenty-second became company L, and the thirty-second became company M.


The medical examination of the officers and enlisted men, developing the fact that quite a number of men could not be accepted, recruits were sent from the home stations of the organi- zations to replace the men rejected.
