Young Men's Association .- The Young Men's Association is an in- stitution of a literary and scientific character, and was established by the young men of this city in the winter of 1835 and '36, and subse- quently incorporated by an act of the Legislature, passed March 3d, . 1843.
The Library, comprising many rare and valuable works, numbers about seven thousand five hundred volumes, and is gradually increasing. It is open to members from 9 A. M. to 12 M .; from 2 to 5 P. M .; and from half past 6 to 9 P. M. A small Cabinet, consisting of minerals and specimens in chonchology, &c., is connected with the society; and specimens in any department of the natural sciences, or curiosities of any kind, are respectfully solicited.
The Reading Room is supplied with all the daily city newspapers, and many from the principal cities in the Union, together with the ablest American and Foreign quarterlies and monthly periodicals. It is open every week day from 8 A. M. to 9 P. M. to members, and strangers in- troduced by members, the latter being entitled to its free use for one month from their introduction. The rooms are in the American Hotel Block.
Lectures, literary and scientific, are maintained during the winter months.

German Young Men's Association-Founded May 10, 1841; char- tered in 1846.
This is a literary Association, having in view the same objects, and conducted upon a plan similar to the American Young Men's Associa- tion. It was originally founded by a few of the German young men of this city, and has greatly increased both in numbers and means. Its library now contains fourteen hundred volumes, mostly German litera- ture, the greater part of which were procured directly from Germany.

Association for the Relief of the Poor .- Organized in the winter of 1849-50. This Society has for its object the suppression of three great evils : indiscriminate alms-giving, professional begging, and the actual wants of the poor. To carry out the plan of the Association, the city has been divided into 57 districts, with a visitor located in each. A map and directory have been prepared, by which an applicant for alms can be directed at once to the visitor within whose district he or she re- sides, who examines the case, and, if relief is really needed, the visitor gives an order on the Treasurer. The funds of the Association are raised by voluntary subscription ; and every annual contributor and every visitor, is a member.
