OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE HUDSON RIVER.
The days on which navigation has been resuined between New York and Albany, during the last five years, are as follows :
1852, March 19.
1851, February 25. Steamboat Oregon arrived, direct from New York, being the first boat which left that city this season for Albany. We believe this is the first instance in which the first boat which has left New York for Albany has been enabled to get through.
1650, March 9. Steamboats Hudson and Buffalo arrived.
1849. March 18. Steamboat Columbia arrived at 2 A. M.
1848, March 22. Steamboat Admiral arrived at 4 P. M.
The following table exhibits the date of the opening and closing of the Hudson River, and the number of days open, from 1830 to the present time:

PRATT & Co.'s HARDWARE ESTABLISHMENT.
Among the objects of interest in our city, well worth a visit from the man of business, or the mere curious, is the celebrated hardware estab- lishment of PRATT & Co., situated on the Terrace, and running back to the Erie canal, a front view of which will be seen on the map. The whole warehouse has a front of eighty feet, running from the Terrace-one of the broadest avenues of our city-to the Erie canal, one hundred and seventy-five feet in depth, presenting, as will be per- ceived, a very imposing and handsome edifice.
THE GROUND ROOM, fronting on the Erie canal, is used as a deposit for flat, round, bar and band iron and steel, nails, and other descriptions of bulky and heavy goods, which are landed directly at the door, and when re-shipped, are taken by carts and drawn directly through the building to Terrace street, and from thence to their destination when sold. There is storage room here for from four thousand to five thou- sand tons of iron, and for upwards of five thousand casks of nails, leav- ing ample room for six or eight carts to load or unload and turn around. - The amount of iron in stock, at the present time, is very large, and we were much surprised to learn that their sales of the various qualities of American, English, Scotch, Swedish, and Norwegian Iron, swelled up to the enormous amount of three thousand tons, during the past year. The arrangement and classification of the various kinds of iron and steel, is deserving of particular admiration-everything being placed with reference to being got at and removed with the least difficulty.
THE FIRST FLOOR, on Terrace street, is divided into three apartments -one of them, thirty by sixty feet, is subdivided into counting rooms, private offices, &c., all communicating with each other, and divided by glass partitions only. Here is a most orderly and admirable arrangement of the desks of the subordinates and principals. The vault, as capa- cious as any of our bank vaults, and protected by one of Day & New- ell's celebrated locks, similar to those exhibited by Hobbs at the World's Fair in London. The next apartment is a beautiful room, thirty by one hundred feet, called the Retail Room. Here, again, the admirable
4

arrangement calls for special attention. The nail bins, with iron bottoms, formed exactly to suit-the file drawers, one hundred and twenty-five in number,-glass cases for painted and Britannia ware -sample cases, &c., &c., all betoken the utmost attention to simplicity and order, al- lowing customers to examine goods with the least possible delay. The adjoining room, fifty by one hundred feet, is devoted to heavy goods, such as chains, anvils, saws, axles, &c., &c., which are also con- veniently arranged in classes. In the retail department, P. & Co. pay particular attention, using it more as an adjunct to their wholesale trade than for the mere profit of the business-as, from the infinite va- riety of calls for articles in this department, they are better enabled to anticipate and supply the wants of their wholesale customers.
THE SECOND FLOOR is also divided into three apartments, two of which are shelved and countered in the most convenient and beautiful manner, and stocked with every variety of shelf hardware, for whole- sale trade only. The adjoining apartment is the Sample Room, and it might well be termed a " Museum of Artificial Curiosities." Here are admirably arranged by classes, samples of all the various kinds of goods for sale in the establishment, from the heavy cross-cut saw down to the finely tempered and delicate article used for severing iron and steel- from the massive bank lock to the minute article used for securing a lady's dressing case; cutlery, hinges, lanterns, carpenters' tools, skatos, axes, in short, almost every article of which metal forms a part or a component, are, in their several classes, all so scientifically arranged, as to enable the wholesale customer, at a glance, to decide upon his selec- tion, and thus save much time usually spent in rambling about the store, and opening and shutting drawers, boxes, &c.
Above these rooms are four floors, which might, perhaps, properly be termed four stores, devoted to the storage of bulky goods, such as shov- els, rakes, hoes, &c. &c. A part of the third floor is shelved and coun- tered, and is devoted to jobbing purposes.
The whole establishment is warmed by two of Kneeland's Furnaces, placed in the basement, which are said to answer the purpose well. The water from the roof is received into a tank in the attic story, and from thence distributed by pipes into each story, with water conductors leading into the canal. The whole premises are lighted with gas-the pendants in the retail and jobbing rooms are very beautiful. .
Some idea may be formed of the magnitude of the business of this establishment, when we state that their sales the past year amounted to over half a million of dollars,-that their average stock on hand exceeds $200,000,-that they give direct employment to over forty clerks and assistants,-have the exclusive agency of the " Buffalo Iron Works and Rolling Mills," where orders for any unusual size of iron can be exe- cuted at short notice,-the " Niagara Pail Factory," where over sixty men are employed, and some $60,000 worth of pails and tubs are annu- ally manufactured-besides numerous smaller establishments, for the manufacture of axes, hoes, cutlery, &c.
In arranging and perfecting the business through a course of upwards of thirty years, the proprietors have done much, both directly and indi- rectly, to build up a manufacturing business here, and the continuance
1

COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER DIRECTORY.
and necessary augmentation of the establishment, as a matter of course, must continue to have an immense influence in fostering and building up a large manufacturing interest in our own immediate neighborhood. . The enterprising proprietors, Messrs. Samuel F. Pratt, Pascal P. Pratt, and Edward P. Beals, are eminently deserving of the success which has crowned their efforts. The senior partner has been in the hardware business, as clerk and principal, over thirty years; and both the junior partners have grown up with it, having over sixteen years experience. Strangers visiting Buffalo, should by no means omit calling here; whether their object be business or mere curiosity, they will find courte- ons and gentlemanly attention, and every facility given to examine this vast concern, which has grown to be emphatically one of the "lions " of Buffalo.
We have thus gone quite minutely into the detail of this truly exten- sive establishment, and we confess we take an honest pride in so doing ; we have traveled some, and we have no hesitation in asserting that it is the most extensive and best arranged hardware establishment in the United States.
