The above figures show a steady increase in the number of vessels and the tonnage of the river craft. It will be remembered that soon after the gathering in of the harvest the demand for sail vessels was quite active, and a large number were attracted hither, by the remunerative rates paid, which had never before been in port. The follow- ing is the total amount of tonnage for each year since 1839:
