National Democrat-E. A. Munson,
PREFACE.
IN submitting to the citizens of Cleveland a City Directory for 1859-60, we deem it an act of justice to ourselves, to explain and remark upon a few things in connection there- with in this prefatory manner. In ordinary cases a book of this character needs no such remark. "A CITY DIRECTORY" sufficiently explains the import and character of the work, but at the present time a few words upon the importance, &c., of the present Directory appear to be necessary.
The delay in its publication has been unavoidable, however annoying it has been to our subscribers and more particularly to ourselves. It will be remembered that last year the City Council provided by ordinance for the assigning and re-numbering of the buildings throughout the city, and appointed an officer to attend to it; supposing it would be prose- cuted to completion last year, we took measures to have the canvassing for the Directory completed at the same time, and its publication made as soon thereafter as practicable. In this we were disappointed, as the re-numbering was delayed until this spring, and effected through our own exertions at last. This delay in re-numbering the streets, of course rendered all our labors last year in canvassing, totally useless. After being thus delayed by matters entirely beyond our control, we have used due dilligence to perfect a new canvass of the city, since the re-numbering was completed ; and to arrange, print and publish the same in its present form. This statement we plead as our excuse for the delay of the publication.
In the meantime the almost indispensable necessity for this Directory has been keenly felt by citizens and strangers. A part of the streets having had their numbers changed, rendered the information in the old Directories uncertain and unreliable, and in many cases worse than useless ; and as the work of re-numbering progressed, the difficulties of finding particular residences increased, until the annoying uncertainty of existing informa- tion made the publication of this Directory indispensable. We do not feel surprised that there should be, under such a condition of things, a great anxiety to have the new Directory printed.
In this work we have given the numbers of the houses and places of business in accor- dance with the re-numbering of the streets. This may and will bring about some degree of uncertainty, inasmuch as some of our citizens have neglected and still neglect to have proper numbers placed upon their buildings, but it will not exist a great while, because in addition to lhe inducement to citizens to have their numbers correspond with the Direc- tory, the proper authorities will soon enforce a compliance with the ordinance. The importance of taking down the old numbers and putting up the new ones cannot be too strongly impressed upon the minds of our citizens. It is of the highest importance to avoid annoyances resulting from such a "'mixture" -- annoyances affecting in a greater or less extent, every resident of the city.
xiv
PREFACE.
The publishers feel a great satisfaction in presenting this Directory to the public, from the fact that it is more complete than any other ever published in Cleveland, having over TWO THOUSAND more names than have been heretofore published. The canvassing, col- lating, arranging and printing, they flatter themselves has been done in a commendable manner, and if not wholly without errors, it has that degree of perfection, which, under the circumstances they think should and does make it valuable, and all that could rea- sonably be expected. Errors undoubtedly have worked their way into the book, and it is improbable and almost impossible, to publish a book of this character without errors. The greatest care and caution, neglecting neither trouble nor expense, has been exercised by the publishers to make it a complete ahd reliable "CITY AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY," and they have the assurance to think that it is such a one as will meet with the appro- bation of the public.
It is now the intention of the publishers to publish a New Directory on the first of June, every year, which will give an opportunity of correcting errors which appear in this and succeeding Directories.
There is one thing that we would like to urge upon the minds of the proper authori- ties, as of great importance and closely allied to the improvement commenced in re-num- bering the streets, and that is to put up proper sign boards on the various streets. There are a great many streets which have none.
To our advertising patrons we return our sincere thanks for their support, and confi- dently present our first issue of the Cleveland City Directory to a discriminating public, trusting that the care and attention bestowed upon its preparation will, in the eyes of a generous community, meet the approbation they deserve.
