PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS.


The Public Schools of the city are divi- ded into Primary, Secondary, Intermediate and Grammar Schools, a Central High School and Branch High School. These Schools are open to all youth between the ages of six and twenty-one. Generally speaking, the Primary Schools are intended for children from six to eight years of age : the secondary and intermediate for those who are from eight to ten; the Grammar Schools for those over ten ; and the High School for those over twelve, who wish to pursue the higher branches of education, and who are found on examination, quali-

fied to enter upon the course prescribed for this School. The period of time spent, however, in each grade of Schools depends more upon scholarship than age. The num- ber of scholars enrolled the past year was about six thousand. Seventy-nine teachers are employed at an annual expense of over $34,000. Penmanship, Drawing and Mu- sic are conducted by professional instructors. There are three terms of school in the year, one of thirteen, and two of fifteen weeks each ; vacations nine weeks.


The School Buildings of the First Ward are on Eagle and Prospect streets; of the Second Ward on Rockwell street ; of the Third Ward on St. Clair, between Bank and Seneca streets; of the Fourth Ward on Brownell street; of the Fifth Ward on St. Clair street, east of Erie; of the Sixth Ward on Mayflower street ; of the Seventh Ward on St. Clair street, near the Pittsburgh R. R. Depot ; of the Eighth Ward on Pearl street ; of the Ninth Ward on Hicks street ; of the Tenth Ward on Kentucky street; of the Eleventh Ward on Penn street. The Central High School is located on Euclid street, and the Branch High School on Ken- tucky street.
