ANDERSON TROOP.
T THE Anderson Troop, an independent cavalry company, primarily intended for escort and headquarters duty with General Robert Anderson, in command of the Army of the Ohio, but subsequently retained with Generals Sherman, Buell, and Rosecrans who succeeded General Anderson, was're- cruited at Carlisle Barracks, during the months of October and November, 1861, for the term of three years, under special authority of the Secretary of War. It was organized with the following officers: William J. Palmer, Captain; William Spencer, First Lieutenant; Thomas S. Maple, Second Lieutenant, and started on the 2d of December for Louisville, Kentucky, arriving on the 7th. For a period of nearly three months, it was thoroughly drilled and disciplined, and the Inspector General reported it as " by far the best company I have yet seen in the department." On the 24th of February, 1862, it moved with General Buell to Nashville, where it remained a month, and then entered upon an active campaign in the field, proceeding with the Army of the Ohio to the support of General Grant at Pittsburg Landing. When heavy firing was heard on the morning of the 6th of April, the head of Buell's column, which had reached Waynesburg, was put in motion, and moved rapidly towards the field. The infantry and artillery took precedence in crossing the river, and hence the Troop did not reach the scene of action until the battle was over. Four of the men, privates Hummel, Hewitt, Ste- venson, and N. M. Smith, were detailed at midnight of the 6th, to report to General Buell on the battle-field. They reached the Landing at daylight, and for the three succeeding days acted as orderlies to the General, winning by their good conduct a complimentary order, in which he says: "They were in the thickest of the fight, and behaved themselves with the coolness of veterans." On the 8th the Troop crossed the river, and encamped three and a half miles south of Shiloh Church, where the headquarters of the army had been estab- lished. In the operations before Corinth, the Troop participated, and on the 1st of June, after the retreat of the enemy, Captain Palmer, with thirty men, sconted as far as Iuka, but without meeting the enemy. Soon afterwards, Buell was ordered to move with his army to Huntsville, Alabama, where he arrived on the 1st of July. On the 24th, Captain Palmer, with a number of his men, was ordered to Pennsylvania, to recruit three additional companies for the formation of a full battalion. This purpose was afterwards changed, and a full regiment was raised, which was known as the Anderson Cavalry. A large number of the officers of the new regiment were taken from the Troop, but the Troop was never incorporated with the regiment, and to the close of :its service remained an independent organization, under command of Lieuten- : ant Maple.

THREE YEARS' SERVICE.
In the race for Louisville, between the armies of Buell and Bragg, which commenced towards the close of August, the Troop acted in conjunction with the Fourth United States Cavalry, and was constantly engaged in the most arduous scouting duty on the flank of the enemy, frequently skirmishing with his cavalry, and keeping the commanding General well advised of his progress and strength. Buell having reached Louisville in advance of the enemy, and having been reinforced, assumed the offensive. At Springfield, on the 6th of October, the Troop was engaged, and on the two following days in the battle of Perryville. Three of its number, while bearing dispatches from M'Cook to Buell, were captured, but managed to destroy the dispatches, thus preventing them from falling into the enemy's hands. After the battle, Bragg retreated rapidly, and the Union army followed to Nashville, where it remained in camp until the 26th of December, when the movement upon Murfreesboro began. In the fierce fighting at Stone River, which ensued, the Troop was actively engaged in orderly and courier duty, receiving the flattering commendation of General Rosecrans, for the fidelity and zeal evinced. Lieutenant Evan W. Grubb was instantly killed by a solid shot, while in the discharge of his duty. At the close of the campaign, the Troop encamped at Murfreesboro, and continued in the discharge of headquarters duty until the 24th of March, 1863, when, having been much reduced in numbers by the ordinary casualties of the ser- vice, and by promotions from its ranks, General Rosecrans ordered its muster- out of service. In a note addressed to its commander, on its departure from the front, General Rosecrans said : "I part with you with as much regret as you yourselves may feel. You are young, and your behavior since I have been in command, gives promise of a career of usefulness and honor, whether in the service of your country, or in private life; may you realize your hopes, and the wishes of your friends."

ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTIETH FIFTEENTH (ANDERSON) CAVALRY.
:
TN the early part of August, 1862, William J. Palmer received authority from the Secretary of War to recruit a battalion of cavalry, which was subsequently extended to recruit a full regiment. Recruiting offices were opened in Philadelphia, Pittsburg, and other parts of the State, and before the end of the month, nearly a thousand men were in the camp of rendezvous at Carlisle, and mustered into the service of the United States. A company, known as the Anderson Troop, had been previously recruited by Captain Palmer, to serve as body guard to General Anderson. It was understood that the new regiment, which he was authorized to recruit, should be employed on similar duty. Accordingly, especial care was taken to obtain a select body, and in its ranks were young men from some of the wealthiest and most influential families in the Commonwealth. Officers of the Troop were placed in charge of the companies, and with the aid of officers from the Regular Cavalry stationed at Carlisle, the drill of the regiment was vigorously prosecuted.
Early in September, the enemy, fresh from his triumphs at Bull Run, began to cross the Potomac in force. The regiment was, accordingly, ordered to re- main in the Cumberland Valley, and two hundred and fifty picked men, with three days' rations, and thirty-six rounds of ammunition per man, were ordered to the front. Proceeding by rail to Greencastle, parties were sent out in all directions to procure horses, the command as yet not having been mounted. One hundred and fifty were obtained, and all the roads leading from the south were picketed, the enemy being in strong force at Hagerstown. Skir- mishing took place on the 12th and 13th, and the pickets were twice driven, but by keeping up a bold front, the enemy was prevented from following up his advantage, supposing, no doubt, that the pickets were well supported. Indeed, General Longstreet, while in possession of Hagerstown, reported to General Lee, that " had he not found swarms of Yankee cavalry in his front, he would have advanced further into the State." The detachment really had no support nearer than Chambersburg, and on the 15th, the dismounted men were sent to that place. On the same day, learning that the enemy was leaving Hagerstown, the detachment was collected, and moving forward in a body, charged through the town, capturing thirty rebel stragglers. It then advanced to Jones' Cross Roads, on the Sharpsburg Pike, where it remained during the night in readiness for an attack, and during the: 17th,, while the battle of Antietam was in progress, was employed) in bringing up stragglers

and scouting, losing one man killed. On the day following the battle, Captain Palmer, while within the enemy's lines in disguise, in the discharge of a dangerous and difficult duty, by order of the commanding General, was taken prisoner and sent to Richmond, where, for several months, he endured the privations of rebel durance. On the 20th, the detachment led the advance of the Pennsylvania Militia, under General Reynolds, to Williamsport, and on the following day, the enemy having made good his escape, returned to Green- castle, delivering the horses to their owners, and thence to their camp at Carlisle.
Up to this time, none but temporary organizations had been made, the men relying on Captain Palmer to select officers of ability and experience to lead them, having, by the terms of their enlistment, waived the right to choose their own officers. His capture, at this critical juncture, proved a great mis- fortune, as the command was left without a head. On the 1st of October, William Spencer, First Lieutenant of the Troop, was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel, Adolph G. Rosengarten, and Frank B. Ward, Majors, and the regiment was organized in ten companies. A full list of company officers was pre- sented to the proper authorities for appointment, but only eleven of these , were commissioned. On the 7th of November, the regiment moved by rail to Louisville, Kentucky, where, upon its arrival, it went into camp, and was mounted. A month later it was ordered forward to Nashville, where the main army, now under command of General Rosecrans, was assembled. At this time, the command had seven field and staff officers, twelve line, and about two-thirds of its complement of non-commissioned officers. "On the 25th, a detachment of two hundred and fifty men was sent out as guard to a foraging train, and while beyond the lines, on the Hillsboro Pike, was attacked, and one man killed; but the enemy was beaten back, and the laden train brought safely in.
