PLACES OF AMUSEMENT.
From a perufal of the foregoing pages, it will obvioufly ap- pear, that there is no city better furnifhed with thofe intitutions, which tend to alleviate the calamities incident to human nature, than Philadelphia ; and that the means of improvement in fci- ence, Philofophy, and religion, are amply provided. Neither are thofe amufements wanting which, in large and populous cities, are generally ftyled polite; of the moft remarkable of thefe we have fubjoined a fhort account.
PEALE's MUSEUM, South weft corner of Third and Lombard Streets.'
In this city is a confiderable Museum of the fubjects of natural hiftory, open to every one : An important acqufition, to fcience and the arts, which is increafing rapidly through the indefatiga- ble and fole efforts of an individual remarkable for his ingenuity and perfeverance rather than for pecuniary abilities. It is won- derful that under very difcouraging circumftances, he fliould have built a houfe one hundreed feet long, including grottos, and fil. led it with fome thoufands of the molt curious and interefting fubjects, well arranged in lefs than eight years. He glows with the generous hope that, hereafter, it will become a great national magazine of information for the benefit of the rifing generation and of pofterity : and that it may not be loft to America, as were. all the collections made before his time, by difpofing of them to

foreigners, he has affured to the public of this country a preferva- tion of all the fubjects of his mufeum, by obliging himfelf not to fell or difpofe of them without having firft obtained the confent of a majority of a number of patriotic gentlemen of fcience, who by his invitation are formed into a fociety of vifitors and in pec- tors over his mufcum. A fmall fum, 25 cents, is paid for ad- mitlion, towards the fupport and increafe of the mufcum.
BOWEN's WAX-WORK, Corner of Eighth aud High Streets.
"This extenfive collection of wax-work has for this fome time paft colleded a rotine of fashionable company, and ftill continues to be the refort of numbers, particularly in the evening, when, it is thought that the figures appear to moft advantage, To give a particular defcription of the different figures would far exceed cur limits, and it would be rather difficult to felect thofe which are moft deferving of notice. Suffice it to fav, that they have an appearance of animation far beyond what can eafily be conceived from inanimate figures, and that they are arranged with the ut- moft tafle and judgment. This exhibition which is now well wor- thy of the attention of the curious ftill continues to increafe .- Price of admiffion only 25 cents.
THEATRES.
We have here two theatres, the one called the old theatre fituated in Cedar, between Fourth and Fifth Streets, now open. The other called the new theatre corner of Sixth and Chemnut Streets, which we are informed will be open fome time in next September.
CIRCUS, High, near the corner of Twelfth Street.
The public have for this fome time paft, been much gratified with the performance of Mr Ricketts the celebrated equeftrian, whofe dexterity in horfemanthip far exceeds any thing of the kind hitherto exhibited in America .- To the honor of this gentleman, it ought not to be omitted that he lately gave a benefit for the purpofe of raifing a fund to buy fuel for the poor during the inclemency of winter-He has the honour of laving the founda- tion, and it cannot be doubted that others will contribute to the increafe of a fund for fo humane a purpufe.
There are a number of places of entertainment in the vicinity of the city to which the inhabitants refort in great numbers, par- ticularly during the fummer months. Of thefe the principal are Gray's gardens remarkable on account of its very romantic fituation, and Harrowgate for its medicinal waters. The Wig. wam in Saffafras Street on the banks of Schuylkill, and Leba- non in Cedar, between Tenth and Eleventh Streets, with many

others, are likewife in the moft agreeable fituations, and in alf the moft punctual attendance is paid to the company.
