In this book are for the latitude of Boston, New England, State of New York, Detroit, Chicago, lowa, or Southern Oregon.
Eclipses for 1880:
There will be six Eclipses, four of the Sun and two of the Moon : I .- A Total Eclipse of the Sun January 11th. Invisible cast of a line drawn through St. Joseph. Mo., and Baton Rouge, La. West of that line on to California, the Eclipse will be seen generally as a partial One, preceding sunset: being central, and total along a line distant twenty miles south of and parallel to a line drawn through Monterey, Cal., Mariposa, and Salt Lake City. Beginning at Denver, Col., at 4h. 1 m. P.M. and at Portland, Oregon, at 2 h. 29 m: P.M., the sun setting eclipsed. Visible to the western quarter of North America and to the Pacific Ocean.
II .- A Total Eclipse of the Moon, June 22d. Invisible at Boston. Visible to Asia, Australia, the Pacific Ocean, and partly to the western edge of North America. To places in California the Moon will sct in the morning partly immersed in the advancing shadow.
III .- An Annular Eclipse of the Sun, July 7th. Invisible to the United States. Visible to the Southern half of South America, to Cape of Good Hope, and to Sonth Atlantic Ocean.
IV .- A Partial Eclipse of the Sun, Dec. Ist. Visible to Southern Ocean. V .- A Total Eclipse of the Moon, December 16th. Visible more or less to the world generally, except to South America, the West India Islands, and eastern portion of North America. To the east- eru seaboard it will be wholly invisible. To the adjoining region as far west as the Mississippi River, the Moon will set in the morning tinged with the advancing penumbral shade. To the region still fur- ther west the Moon will set more or less in shadow.
VI .- A Partial Eclipse of the Sun, December 31st. Visible to eastern portion of North America as far west as Illinois and Mississippi, to Europe, and to North Atlantic Ocean. To all places in the United States where visible, the sun will rise partly eclipsed ; the eclipse end- ing in the morning at the times given as follows :
Portland, 9h. 17m. A.M. Boston, 9h. 9m. A.M. New York, Sh. 50m. A.M. Columbus, 7h. 59m. Philadelphia, 8h. 41m. A.M.
An occultation of Mars will occur March 17th. Visible to the eastern portion of North America; happening shortly after sunset, and lasting generally about an hour and a quarter.
