5. Samuel Phelps, tragedian, died in London, aged 72 years.
6. On the night of this date, the body of the late A. T. Stewart was stolen from the family vault in St. Monk's churchyard, New York.
7. The Olneyville ( Providence) Free Baptist Church observed the i semi-centennial anniversary of its organization this evening. The church debt of $1500 was raised.
8. The violaters of the U. S. reg- istration law were prosecuted be- fore the U. S. Commissioners, in Boston, Gen. Butler appearing for the defendants.
9. Eight hotels, and a large num- ber of summer cottages, at Cape May, N. J., destroyed by fire; loss $450,000.
9. Boston Dyewood & Chemical Co.'s works in East Boston burned ; loss $60,000.
12. Davis J. King, hatter, nom- innted for mayor of Boston on tlie workingmen's ticket.
13. The 24th triennial festival of the Mass. Charitable Mechanic As- sociation observed this evening, in Boston.
14. The new City ITall in Provi- dence, R. I., just completed, at a cost of $1,000,000, was dedicated to-day. Hon. Abraham Payne de- livered an oration.
14. The Continental Clothing House, Boston, illuminated by means of the electric light, the first mercantile establishment in the country to introduce this exper- iment.
14. Capt. John S. Sleeper, for- merly editor of the Boston Jour- ral, and for three years mayor of Roxbury, died, aged 84 years.
IC. A locomotive boiler explosion In Mehanoy City. Pa., killed five persons.
17. An attempt was made to as- Bassinste King Humbert of Italy, while riding through the streets of Naples. He was slightly wounded in the arm, before the would-be Assassin could be secured.
1s. Four N. Y. counterfeiters, who have been passing bogus silver tears in Providence, were arrested tu that city.
18. A disastrous flood at Nor- wich, England, submerged four or five miles of streets, and upwards of three thousand houses were made uninhabitable.
20. The Aincer ot Afghan spurns the British ultimatum, and the English troops have been ordered to advance.
21. Thirteen persons killed at a coal mine explosion in Sullivan, Indiana.
21. The United States paid to the British Government $5,500,000 in gold, the amount of the fisheries award.
21. Hon. George O. Brastow, for- merly mayor of Somerville, died, aged 68 years.
22. Richard A. Bullock com- mitted suicide in Woonsocket, R.I.
23. The president and seven di- rectors of the defunct State Bank of New Brunswick, N. J., were arrested to-day, charged with de- frauding the depositors.
23. The Marquis of Lorne, the new governor-general of Canada, and his lady, the Princess Louise, arrived at Halifax. N. S.
25. "II. M. S. Pinafore," a two- act operetta, by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, was performed this evening, for the first time in this country, at the Boston Museum
25. The steamship Pommerania, from New York tor Hamburg, col- lided with a Welsh barque in the English Channel, off' Folkestone, and over fifty lives were lost.
26. Mayor Doyle, of Providence, re-elected, by a majority of 1,002 votes.
28. Thanksgiving Day.
28. The corner-stone of the new Catholic Cathedral, in Providence, was laid with imposing ceremonies. The archbishop ot Boston, four bishops and fifty clergymen par- ticipated in the exercises.
28. Robert Heller, the magician, died in Philadelphia.
29. Commodore William Spieer, commandant of the Charlestown Navy Yard, died, aged 57 years.
29. Louis A. Godey, founder and publisher of Godey's Lady's Book, died, aged i5 years.
20. Wyoming Thread Mills, at Fall River, Mass., partially de- stroyed by fire ; loss $75,000.

30. Gladstone, in a speech at Greenwich, England, declared the war upon Afghanistan an unjust one.
30. Hon. Lyman Tremain, of Albany, N. Y., died, aged 60 years.

2. President Hayes's message received and read in Congress. He refers to the tearful spread of the pestilence at the South, and sug- gests "National sanitary admin- istration, which shall not only control quarantine, but have the sanitary supervision of internal commerce in times of epidemic." Referring to the financial condition of the country, he concludes by saying : " Let the healing influence of time, the inherent energies of our people, and the boundless re- sources of our country, have a fair opportunity, and relief from pres- ent difficulties will surely follow."
2. George Henry Lewes, English author, and husband of Marian Evans (George Eliot), died, aged 61 years.
3. M. Tkindt, manager of the Banque de Belgique, which he de- frauded of 20,000,000 francs, has been sentenced to fifteen years sol- itary confinement.
3. The new building of the Bos- ton Medical Library Association, at No. 19 Boylston place, was ded- icated this evening. The library now contains 10,000 volumes.
4. Supervising Architect Hill suspended from office, by order of President Hayes.
4. Mary Dunn, aged 105 years, died in Providence.
5. Jeremiah Heath, a respected citizen of Providence, died sud- denly, aged 54 years.
5. Emperor William returned to Berlin, and resumes the reins of Government, which have been in the hands of the Crown Prince since the attempted assassination of the emperor, June 2, 1878.
5. Early convening of the Brit- ish Parliament, on account of the declaration of war against Afghan- istan. The Queen's speech was un- usually brief, and mainly referred to the Afghan War.
