INTRODUCTION.
With this volume we beg to present the Thirteenth volume of the VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND and we believe that this will prove as interesting as any one of the previous volumes of the series. We have finished the Deaths from the Providence Jour- nal and have commenced those from the Providence Gazette. These bear date from 1762 to 1830 and will supply a long felt want to the genealogical student. The public records have little or nothing in the way of deaths, and many burials have no stones with the record upon them, especially at the period covered in the earlier portion.
Some of our friendly critics think we have too many notes at- tached to our announcement of the death. We are always ready to receive advice but we still believe our notes will be received with pleasure by most of our readers, and particularly those notes that most decidedly place the person named and the locality of the death.
With the respective newspapers we have placed an extended note regarding the publication of the same.
We still have occasion to feel thankful to the General Assem- bly that they have in their wisdom been pleased to extend their courtesy towards this volume as they have so cheerfully done in the case of those volumes before published. We have also occasion to thank those officers having in charge the file of newspapers from which these notes were taken. Finally we thank our friends, who have stood by us in our work, for their kind assistance and en- couragement of our labor.
Please bear in mind in reading our dates that in the original published list many have no date of death assigned while many others have the date distinctly given. In the former case the word JOURNAL or GAZETTE before the date means that in the paper of this date the death was announced, the exact date not being given. Again the reader will be much surprised to note how long a time elapses in many cases between the date of the death and its an- nouncement. The people in those days were not so prompt in such matters as they are today.
We close by trusting that the reader will find a pleasure in the perusal of this volume, as well as feel that he has been well com- pensated for his time spent in our company.
