SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH, RICHMOND.
From a scant record in the hands of the Clerk we drew. the following brief notes :
July 7, 1774 an invitation was sent to Elders Solomon Sprague, Eleazer Brown and Simeon Brown to constitute as a church on Aug. 1, 1774. There was considerable friction about coming to this agree- ment. The Church was not constituted until the last Monday of November 1774 with 19 members as follows :
Charles Boss, Robert Kenyon, George Nye, Nathaniel Perkins, Sip Potter, Mial Salisbury, Joshua Clarke, John Worden, Lewis Sunderland, Abigail Niles, Elizabeth Allen, Ruth Kenyon, Avis Rogers, Ruth Salisbury, Jude Boss, Mary Taft, Ruth Tripp, (mar- ried afterwards C. Boss), Elizabeth Clarke, Martha Burdick.
It was ordered at this time a Record Book, two puter platters and two beaker glasses for communion service.
The Church met once in four weeks at the house of William Tefft in Richmond. Before the Church had got so far towards a Church organization we find these three stray minutes.
Nov. 20, 1773, present at William Tefft's house Pardon Tilling- hast, Robert Kenyon, Harper Rogers, William Tefft, George Nye, Jeremiah Crandall, Nathaniel Perkins.
Nov. 14, 1773. On the question of forming a church Harper Rogers, Pardon Tillinghast, Robert Kenyon, George Nye, William Tefft, Jeremiah Crandall, Mial Salisbury, Jeremiah Tefft, Nathaniel Perkins, William Bentley, Charles Boss, Mary Tefft, Content Boss, Elizabeth Clarke, Abigail Niles.
By the 25th of December the following additional had been procured : James Potter, Squire Potter, Elizabeth Allen, Avis Rogers, James Clarke, Abigail Bentley.
On the 24th of March following at the house of Wilham Bent- ley the following persons signed the Covenant : Charles Boss, Wil- liam Bentley, Robert Kenyon, George Nye, Joseph Boss, Nathaniel Perkins, Content Boss, Abigail Niles.
We can now go forward. Dec. 7, 1776 at the house of Dyer Burdick, "Voted to build a house 30x26 feet finished inside with

seats instead of pews." The following Committee was named to carry the vote into effect : Robert Kenyon, James Kenyon, Mial Salisbury, Joseph Austin, Nathaniel Perkins.
A deed had been procured from Benjamin Worden of Rich- mondtown of the northeast corner of his land. A subscription paper was ordered drawn for subscribers of money or material for the proposed house and lot.
The next most interesting paper we found was the call to Charles Boss to become their watchman, which was dated April 19, 1781, and bore the following names :-

At this time an invitation was sent to Elders Simeon Brown, Eleazer Brown, Solomon Sprague, Caleb Nichols and Elisha Greene to assist in the ordination of Charles Boss.
Under date of Jan. 23, 1783, we find a tax bill against the mem- bers for Elder Boss's service for the year previous which was con- sidered to be worth 50 bushels of corn, and the following persons paid their proportion as follows :
Joshua Clarke, 5; Gideon Babcock, 3; William Perkins, 3; David Clarke, 2; Allen Greene, 1; Gideon Clarke, 11; Perry Watson, 5}; Thomas Potter Gardiner, 2}; Wate Rogers, 2}; William Bentley, of John, 23; Lathan Johnson, 1; Jonathan Johnson, 1}; Joseph Austin, 4; Nathaniel Perkins, 3; Elizabeth Bosworth, 1}; Ichabod Peter- son, I3.

We next give an obituary notice taken from a Providence news- paper.
"On Sunday, the 27th day of July last departed this life Elder Charles Boss, pastor of a Baptist Church in Richmond, in the 41st year of his age, after a long and tedious illness, during which he was a pattern of patience, exceedingly resigned to the will of God, leaving satisfactory evidence of his having obtained the full assur- ance of faith. Ile was a man of uncommon piety which he happily recommended by a well ordered life and conversation. His zeal for religion was conducted with so much discretion, so sweetened by modesty, humility and a wining benevolence that it was not easy to determine who loved him best, those who most or those who least differed from him. His remains were removed to his Meeting House on the 29th where Elder Eleazer Browne delivered an excel- lent discourse on the occasion from 2 Tim. 4th Chapter, 6, 7, 8

verses, attended by a vast throng of people of almost all Denomina- tions."
The membership at the time of the death of Elder Boss was 42. Sept. 10, 1804 new members added 49, making 85 in all. This year the house was extensively repaired. This time Elder Oliver Knight was hired and continued annually. Esther Tanner's name became unpleasantly associated with that of the Elder's. Gideon Clarke lead the complainants and much bitterness and feeling was aroused from the effects of which the cause suffered for many years.
Previous to May 28, 1836, the church was in the Stonington As- sociation of Baptist, since which it has belonged to the Warren.
Dea. John Stanton was appointed Aug. 27, 1836, Wait R. Clarke, Jeremiah Briggs and George W. Atwood appointed Feb. 22, 1840.
In 1836 Elder David Burnett was engaged half time and other half he devoted to missionary work in the vicinity. He represented the church in the Warren Association Aug. 27, 1837.
The membership has been at various times as follows : Oct. 12, 1811, 77; Oct. 12, 1812, 66; Sept. 1, 1871, 79; Aug. 26, 1872, 77; report of 1875, 78; 1876, 70; 1877, 70; 1878, 112; 1880, 106; 1881, 100; 1882, 99; 1883, 92; 1884, 79; 1886, 84.
