First General Baptist Church of Richmond
The records of this Church extend back to the year 1723 with probability of a much earlier origin. In this year they chose Daniel Averitt, of Providence, as their pastor. He remained with them in that year and was formally ordained to the pastorial office May 25, 1732.
The records of the Church previous to 1770 are lost.
At a Church meeting, Dec. 26, 1770, Elder John Pendleton was taken on trial and was finally ordained Feb. 11, 1771. The Church voted to commune only with those of their own faith and order.
At this time the Church had 213 lay members. At a meeting Sept. 7, 1771, a committee was appointed to take a deed of the Meeting-house lot where the Church now stands. It thus appears that the house was being erected.
Next we find the Church called Henry Joslin to take the watch. care of them June 7, 1788, and was ordained their pastor 14th of August following. Next we find a branch of the Richmond Church located at Amsterdam, in New York State.
At a church meeting in Richmond, Sept. 2, 1797, they took into consideration a request from the Amsterdam Branch, calling them to ordain Brother Wm. Allen, a member of Richmond Church, to labor with them, which was granted. He was ordained Nov. 6, 1798.
Next we find that there had existed for some time, a branch of this church at Broadalbin, in the state of New York, and, as many of the Richmond Church members had moved to that section, they earnestly solicited Elder Joslin to come and settle with them. Ac- cordingly, on the 8th of March, 1806, Elder Joslin requested liberty of the Church to remove there, which was granted him. From 1771 to 1802, as near as we can find by the records, they had received 217 members and ordained 3 deacons.
Now we commence a new book of records of First General Six Principal Baptist Church of Richmond, 1802, and canvass them down to the present time.
First, we find Elder Henry Joslin pastor. In August 29, 1805,
388
VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND
their statistics show 178 lay members, 2 elders, 3 deacons, total 183. We have stated above that Elder Joslin had resigned to go to the branch church at Broadalbin, N. Y., the Richmond Church being now left destitute of a shepard until Sept. 10, 1810, when Deacon Joseph James was chosen for pastor ; also, at about the same time, David Kenyon and Weeden Barber were chosen for deacons, all ordained to their respective offices Sept. 17, 1810. Next we find a report from the branch church of West Greenwich (now called Plain), which the mother church of Richmond had called them to make, which reads as follows: "Members baptised in the years 1813 and 1814, under the watch-care of Elder Wm. Manchester, 40. Members united with said branch during the two years."
From Sept. 17, 1810, to Dec. 30, 1827, Elder James labored as pastor of said church and there were 114 members added. (Elder James died Nov. 2, 1828.)
From the death of Elder James to Dec. 6, 1832, the sister churches supplied this church with ministers. Dec. 6, 1832, Brother Weeden Barber, Jr., was ordained to the ministry as assistant elder of said church. August, 1833, Elder Thomas Tillinghast was called by the church to take the pastoral care of said church, which he accepted and labored faithfully until 1862. Number added to the church under his care, 816 ; average per year, 28 1-7.
Rev. Gilbert Tillinghast was called and installed as pastor April 12, 1862, and remained until his death, May 16, 1877-68 members were added during his pastorial care. Rev. S. B. Bailey was installed pastor June 25, 1877. Resigned Jan. 7, 1882. During his services 6 were added to the church. Rev. 1). L. Beanett installed pastor April 8, 1882. His resignation received by the church March 12, 1892. During his labors 22 members were added. Since his resig- nation we have had no regular pastor, but have had assistants once a month to administer the sacrament. Rev. L. F. Randolph has preached to us three Sundays and sometimes four each month to good acceptance. During these five years there have been 10 members received into the church. Total members received into the Woodriver Church from 1802 to 1897, 1219; previous to 1802, 430. Total 1649.
The old plant has had five branches spring out from her labors, and bore good fruit, namely : Broadalbin, N. Y., Amsterdam, N. Y., West Greenwich, South Kingstown and Charlestown. Should the members of the branches be all counted, of the old mother church, it would probably swell the number to over three thousand.
We are indebted to Deacon J. Clarke Reynolds for this sketch and the list of the members which we have placed in the order here given.
FIRST GENERAL BAPTIST CHURCH RICHMOND-MEMBERS 389
Members.
NOTE .- It will be noted that the members are recorded 1770, 1810, 1814, and W. G. B. (West Greenwich Branch), This refers to the list started under those dates. The others not so designated belong to The Elder James list and are to be so considered.
