THE QUIDNESSET BAPTIST CHURCH.

The history of this church in connection with the biography of its first pastor, breaks the rule that has come to be believed univer_ sally, "That a prophet has no honor in his own birthplace." Elder Joseph Wanton Allen, born Aug. 22, 1794, died May 2, 1873, at one o'clock P. M., spent his whole life within the limits of this church he founded and continued to serve until death. He united with the Baptists in 1816. May 30, 1822, he joined the First Baptist Church of North Kingstown. He was early licensed to preach and did so ac- ceptably in the vicinity. June 1, 1828, he established the Union Branch of the Baptist Church. He was blessed with worldly goods so much that he was not dependent upon his people for his salary. His life bore out the faith he believed, and he left behind him a name that is respected as well as honored.

Jan. 12, 1839, the Branch took on the articles of a distinct church and drew a Covenant. They were recognized April 4, 1839.

In April, 1842, this church passed a spirited resolution against African Slavery.

The new meeting house was built free from debt and dedicated Aug. 11, 1842.

In 1844, the church had a musical war over the question, shall instrumental music be used in the church? The vote was No. This was a common affair in those days, some churches breaking up over it. The act was repealed in 1849.

In November, 1849, a stranger came into the neighborhood. He could preach finely and was so invited. Inquiries led to the fact that he was not a minister, an accepted member of, any church, and further that his life belied his words. The church was much disturbed over the affair and placed upon its records the following resolution:

"That we will not invite any stranger to hold forth in our meet- ing house in the future who does not come accredited from the church of which he is a member or recommended as a Minister of Christ."

VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND

We write this down because we believed the church was sound and honest at the time and proposed to remain so. It is not the part of a historian to take sides in controversies, but to state the facts on both sides impartially. While we do not profess any christian faith we have as high regard for all the attributes of virtue and right living as any one, and we make no exceptions. In this vote a wise thing was done as well as a prudent one. In our expe- rience with records and historical studies we have often come into collision with the question, "Why did you break up?" and found this fact as above stated to have been the cause. While I think the right of free speech should be liberally considered I do not think a stranger, without proper credentials, should be given charge or direction of the service. These men, many of them impostors, have done the cause they profess to serve great harm by this conduct. A man that honestly desires to try his gift should not be ashamed to prepare his credentials and show them where needed in order to protect himself and his friends from future trouble. I think it is doing a crime, if not the highest blasphemy, to act otherwise. Farther I believe the church cannot be too firm in holding to such a wise thing as we have recorded in this church.

In our Narragansett Historical Register we published in the April number, 1883, and the July following two sketches (a) Rev. Joseph Wanton Allen, by Daniel G. Allen (Quidnesset); (b) History of the Church, by Rev. William l'. Chipman the then pastor. These sketches have a portrait of the Elder, and the first, second and third meeting houses. The sketches are worth reading by one who wishes a fuller account of this church.
