Joshua Babcock, born June 5, 1783, died Oct. 1, 1810. He was a farmer and merchant who lived and died on Pendleton Hill. His parents were Oliver and Anna (Avery) Babcock, and grandparents were James and Sarah (Vose) Babcock. He married the daughter of John and Elizabeth (- ) Palmer, of Lisbon. Miss Elizabeth Palmer, his wife, was born Sept. 3, 1772, and died Nov. 7, 1818.
The following item regarding the dark day appears in his diary:
"May 19, 1780 was from II o'clock a. m. until about 1 o'clock p. m., a time of the greatest darkness that ever I knew whilst the sun was above the earth."
