GIST- In 1759 Benjamin Gist left the Deep River section of North Carolina with a group of Baptists, members of the Deep River congregation, which included PHILIP MULKEY (an early church-Organizer) JOSEPH BREED, SHUBAL STEARNS, OBEDIAH HOWARD, among others, who went first to BROAD RIV S. C. in 1762 the group settled in present Union County. (From North and South Carolina church records. ) They- esta- blished a church here, I would like to know the name of : church . and whether the records have survived. BENJAMIN GI was granted a tract of land on July 15, 1768, described &! lying in CRAVEN COUNTY, S.C. (S.C. LAND GRANTS, BK. 16,f 475) on a branch of TYGER RIVER called FAIR FOREST CREEK, including the mouth of a branch called SUGAR CREEK, of 500 acres. I have anot been able to trace the deed of sale! of this land. Any suggestions? BENJAMIN GIST appears to have moved away to (then) WASHINGTON COUNTY, N. C. about 1776-77, where he served during the REVOLUTIONARY WAY, his land later falling in GREENE COUNTY, TENN. I hoped to fir .: records of the birth of some of his children in S.C. or possibly a deed bearing his wife's name. Records of Union & Spartanburg Counties do not cover this early period app ... rently. Feb. 17, 1773 William Gist was granted a tract of 50 acres in (then) CRAVEN COUNTY, S.C. on a branch of Fal: Forest Creek bounding southwest by PHILIP MULKEY'S land, northeast & South east by JALES MEANS land. (S.C. Grants; bk. 28, f. 414. ) This was in the vicinity of the land gras' ed in 1768 to BENJAMIN GIST. Want to know relationship, i' any between BENJAMIN & WILLIA GIST. The latter named, Wi .. GIST was a Torv during the Revolution. He was a member of the British force at King's Mountain, escaped with two co". panions; his property was confiscated, but returned to his wife after the war. He resided at thet period in Charlest: His family removed to Fair Forest. His grandson WM. HENRY

."ERIES CONT ...

GIST was the secessionist governor of S. C. ! ( BENJAMIN GIST & two other relatives were with the Americian force at KING'S MOUNTAIN. ) WILLIAM GIST married in 1773/4 SARAH FINCHER whose parents resided in Union Dist. He died Oct. 31 ;; 1802, is buried in St. Michael's churchyard. His :ill .was probated in Charleston. His are, ( tombstone record ) WAS 62 yrs. Were these marriage. bonds in Union Dist. or 'whatever it was called in 1773/4? Would like to establish the relationship if any, between BENJAMIN & WM. GIST. The fact. that BENJ. GIST settled in the area in 1768 & that Wid. married & was granted land in the vicinity some time later gives rise to the question of whether they were father & son. It has been stated that WM. GIST went to S. C. from BALTIMORE CO. MARYLAND, which was the ancestral home of that family. However there were numerous GISTS named WM. (christen) names were repeated in all branches. We find among the Moravian records, mention of BENJAMIN YOUNG being the son-in-law of NATHANIEL GIST. (In 1754 & again in 1770) On Aug. 10, 1762 BENJ. YOUNG was granted 699 acres of land in ROWAN CO. N. C. lying on both sides of the TOWN FORK of DAN RIVER. (N. C. Grants; bk 6, f 237) The 1790. census .lists NATHANIEL, BENJ., WM., JOSHUA & SAML. YOUNG as living in STOKES CO. N. C. Of these, NATHL., JOSHUA & WM. are difinito GIST names. NATHL. & CHRISTOPHER GIST were brothers who were born in BALTIMORE CO. MD. & moved to: the DAN RIVER.& YADKIN section of present N. C. between 1745-50. In 1750 CHRISTOPHER GIST became an agent of the OHIO CONP. NY, exploring the Ohio River country west to the Miami And south to the Great Falls in 1750-51, returning to WILLS CREEK, MARYLAND, continued, exploring & in 1753 . had established a small set lement in present Penn. not far from the GREAT MEADOWS. In the winter of 1753 he was Washington's guide to the French Forts. Would like any additional help and correspondece with relatives of these families.
