Rutherford County was created by an Act of the General Assembly at Knoxville October 25, 1803. County was formerly part of Davidson County and was named in Honor of Major-General Griffith Rutherford of Revolutionary fame.
County Courts were mt organized until January 3, 1804 and Jefferson was the first County seat. Murfreesboro became the permanent County seat in 1911 and the State Capital from 1817 until 1326
Rutherford County Deed Records began in 1804 with first Deeds recorded during the April Term of the County Court.
Only Genealogical information, Names Dates and prior places of residence (where riven) has been abstracted from the Deeds. No attempt has been made to interpret or to correct spelling. Searchers should check all names that may sound or look like the names for which they are searching.
Should a copy of an entire Deed be desired, it may be obtained for a reasonable fee from the Office of Register, Rutherford County Courthouse, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In ordering be certain to supply Deed and Book Number and Names of Grantor and Grantee.

Many Deed numbers containing the names of the following were not listed in the INDEX and the reason is given for each.
J. GLASGOW Was Secretary during the terms of several Governors of North Carolina and his name appears on many NORTH CAROLINA LAND GRANTS.
JOSEPH HERNDON was Rutherford County Court Clerk from 1804 to 1813 and his name appears following registration of Deed.
RICHARD DOBBS SPAIGHT was a Governor of North Carolina and many LAND GRANTS were issued during his term or terms.
J. SPAIGHT Was a recording secretary and his name appears rather frequently on LAND GRANTS.
North Carolina Land Grants were not listed in the INDEX. However, the Grantee and all pertinent information available is given.
