The RESUSCITATOR, (German, LEBENSWECKER) is in itself a repre- sentative of an entire apothecary; for it acts as a tapefactor, a reviver, an aperient, and a regulator of the circulation of the blood. Rheumatic Pains, Headaches, Toothache, Cramps, Asthma, Quinsy, etc., etc., must yield to it forthwith. Dis- eases of the Eye, Ear, Stiffness of the Joints, Tetters, Jaundice, Hemorrhoids, Green-Sickness, Gout of all forms, Inflammation of the Throat, Syphilis, etc., are certainly and safely cured. In such critical cases as Apoplexy, Inflammation of the Brain, Pneumonia, Colic, Typhus Fever, Cholera, Yellow Fever, Asphyxia, etc., where no time is left for consultation, but instant relief must be secured, the Resuscitator proves itself a Life-Preserver.
The simple and easy manner in which these remedies are applied renders it practicable for everyone to use them with success in his own family.

R. L. POLK & CO'S PROVO CITY DIRECTORY.
INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting our first Directory of Provo City and Utah county, we feel hat an apology is due for the delay in issuing the book. It could not be avoided on account of some changes produced by our re-organization of the territory of the Rocky Mountain region and the Pacific states for more systematic and effective work in our general directory business. This involved some transfers in the general management, and it took some time to get down to details in the more complete and satisfactory business arrangement we now have in operation.
We trust, however, that the completeness and value of this book bas not been seriously affected by the work being done in the transition stage. If, however, there should crop out any errors of information in minor de- tails, we promise that future editions of the Provo Directory will be up to our usual high standard of accuracy, as we will hereafter have a man resi- dent in the field to attend to our future publications. Great pains has been taken to make this book complete in all its details. We sent our experi- enced men to all parts of the county who went from door to door in Provo and all the villages and obtained the names, so far as possible, from the individuals themselves.
The list of tax payers was taken from the county assessment rolls, each name on separate slips and then these carefully rearranged and compiled so as to have them strictly alphabetical for ready referenece without the reader being obliged to hunt through the entire alphabet to find the. name he is looking for. The advantage of this in the great saving of time is apparent.
Our classified list of business firms in all the towns will be found of special convenience as it gives a complete list of all business men under their several headings.
We congratulate the people of this rich and productive country on its many advantages, and the city of Provo on its splendid growth. It is easy to predict a bright future for this city and its thriving neighbors in the county. We return our hearty thanks to the business men who have liber- ally patronized our book. This is introductory enough, so far as the people of this community are concerned, but for the sake of our large number of readers in other parts of the country who will have frequent access to this book we append brief sketches of the cities embraced in our directory :
PROVO.
This is the judicial seat of Utah county, the second county of the terri- tory in population and the richest in agricultural advantages and resources Provo was first settled in 1848. It covers an area of 112 square miles and is admirably laid out in blocks of 24 rods square and streets about 100 feet wide lined on either side with beautiful shade trees, which are kept
18
R. L. POLK & co's
green and thriving by perpetually running streams of p ure water flowin along the gutters of many of the streets. The water supply of this beau- tiful city is one of its most interesting features. There is a canal which leads through the city an abundant supply of the crystal fluid in a pure stream from the Wasatch mountains. In addition to this there are Artesian wells all over the city and in fact all over this part of the valley. The canal furnishes admirable power for manufacturing purposes, and, with the wells, an abundant supply for domestic and irrigation purposes, to say nothing of the freshness and beauty they impart to the city shade trees and shrubbery. No more beautiful location could be selected for a city than this, nestled as it is under the shadows of the picturesque mountains, fac- ing the rich and expansive valley and lying on the border of the placid Utah Lake, the lovliest body of fresh water in all this mountainous region. The city contains many interesting features in the way of improvements of substantial merit. The Mormon Temple, when completed, will cost $150,000. The Territorial Insane Asylum is located here. The Court House is a fine structure; the woolen mills an important feature, and there are some busi- ness blocks that are a credit to any city. The reader is referred to the Mis- cellaneous Department of this book, immediately following this introduc- tory, for a complete list of public and private institutions, churches, cor- porations, etc. The population of Provo according to the best estimate we can make is about 6000.
Sketches of the other cities in this county will be found as introduc- tory to the directories of those places respectively on pages 102, 119, 137, 161, and 185.
