PREFATORY.
The Directory publishing business of the United States, especially of the South and West, has grown to such an extent in the past ten years that now hardly a village of seven or eight thousand but has its Directory. .A glance at the history of Directory publications of Richmond may not, at this time, be uninteresting. The first Directory was published in 1819, by John Maddox, a reprint of which I have been enabled, through the kindness of T. C. Williams, Esq., to make for the Directory of this year. This venture was made at a time, when, according to the census of the year following, the population of the city and county was only 11, 763 white, 2,100 free colored, and 9,804 slaves. The next publication was in 1823, following which came the one of 1829. So far as I have been able. to learn, no other work of the kind was attempted for fourteen years, or until 1843, when published one.
In 1851 William L. Montague issued his first, and in 1852 his second. edition.
Following Montague's, came Butter's of 1855, and next the one of 1856, by the late Moses Ellyson, of the Dispatch Company.
In 1858 a Directory of the business-houses only, was published by E. M. Coffield & Co.
The 1859 and 1860 books (the last published before the war) were issued by W. Eugene Ferslew. There were none issued during the war.
In 1866 (the first after the war) two directories were given to the pub- lic-one by Starke & Mills and one by W. J. Divine & Co.
In 1868, William H Boyd, of Washington, the veteran and one of the Pioneer Directory Publishers of the United States, issued his first, and in IS70 his second one. In this latter year there were two books issued, Messrs. Dudley & Co., of Boston, Mass., having run Boyd opposition. The '71 and '73 books were published by B. W. Gillis; the '74 by Sheriff & Chataigne. The '76, of which there were two by Chataigne & Gillis and Sheriff & Co. Since '76 the subscriber has published in face of all opposition, and gained for the Richmond Directory the reputation of being ONE OF THE MOST COMPLETE in its different departments in the United States.

An approxi nate estimate was made in '74 of the population by multi- plying the total number of names in the Directory by 4 (used in the North), giving Richmond at that time 62,244. If the Chicago multiplier (372) be now used our city would have 75,061, all of which I have no doubt it has. The census of ISSo gave us 63,600, and the police census 71,000.
In size the Directory has increased from 294 pages in 1874 to 568 in 1883, or nearly doubled. The publisher would be glad to chronicle the fact that his subscription list and advertisements had increased in propor- tion, but while there are several hundred business men who appreciate the value of and BUY THE DIRECTORY, there are twice as many who need it but who prefer to BORROW from their neighbors, thus facilitating their own business at their neighbor's expense.
Many Directories are lost each year, thought to be stolen, which are ONLY loaned out and never returned. Each year the canvassers report old patrons lost because of this habit of borrowing, for, says the patron, "I have always been buying the Directory and would like to keep it in my house, but my neighbors use it more than I do, and I am tired buying for their accommodation."
Last year the following device was printed on the outside covers of the Directory : " This Directory is for the sole use of -; " but even it does not seem to have stopped the borrowing habit. Now, then, this year I desire to say to those who are too poor or too mean to buy a Directory, that if they will call at the DIRECTORY OFFICE they can there use the Directory and thus save their neighbors who are patrons much annoyance.
I desire, in conclusion, to thank all those who have kindly encouraged and assisted me by their patronage, and promise them my best endeavors to make the Directory more complete and valuable each succeeding year.
Respectfully,
J. H. CHATAIGNE, Publisher.
